is it safe to assume at this point that Che isn't a stock cover and that orange cover is the real cover?

That was the safe assumption all along. You didn't really think they'd change that, did you?

Disappointing to see Seth's lifeless line-work in the collection.

Does anybody know where this comes from? (poster, drawing, etc.)

I've found it somewhere on the net about a year ago and liked it so much, but couldn't find an original source for it.

Thanks.

Good to see that we have a suitable Barmy replacement.

It was the poster artwork for the theatrical restoration, almost surely designed simultaneously with the existing Criterion covers

It was done by David Downton who made this style popular via his fashion illustrations. He also did the other Ophüls covers and the Jules & Jim one for Criterion. http://www.daviddownton.com/html/recentwork1.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks to both of You =D>

I just adore his stuff. (still adore Ophuls' much more)

If only Martine Carol managed to be not that wooden not only on CC cover, but also in the film...

That Seth cover looks exactly like at least two other covers he's done (one for a volume of Dorothy Parker, and one for a comic anthology).

Well, that's probably why they hired him. Just thank god it wasn't Adrian Tomine, the dullest fucking cartoonist on the planet. It's too bad they couldn't get Johnny Ryan for Salo.

If they ever get Chris Ware to do a cover, I'll go broke, then blind, in that order.

I still don't get that cover. I think I actually prefer the bland out-of-focus Christmas lights. That'll teach me to complain.

One of the more memorable scenes takes place while two characters are smoking...

Maybe I should clarify: I get why there's a cigarette on the cover, but I don't get why the cigarette smoke turns into a cottony, PhotoShop smudge tool Christmas tree or why the star looks like it's blasting off separately, space shuttle-style.

I think this movie is just so overstuffed that a simple Criterion-style cover just can't do it justice. I wish they would have commissioned some sort of heavily-detailed, illustrated family portrait of all the characters, or maybe of the kids. This might have been a perfect commission for Caitlin Kuhwald (even though I've been down on her covers in the past).

Yeah, Chris, how does that cover look in person? I don't 'get' the tree. It seems formless and lazy, the little tendrils serving no purpose rather than to make the smoke look organic, but rather just making it contrived. I keep thinking it'll make sense once I see it up close...

I realized something: a lot of people hated the covers of "Last Year at Marienbad" and "Monsoon Wedding," but they turned out to be based on those films' title sequences.

Are there any other Criterion covers based on openings?

I don't know if it looks any better or different in person. I actually like the cover, though before this evening I had actually never seen the film.
