They should release Winterbottom's previous film, "Genova" (still not released in R1), as well while they're at it. :-"

As I've said before, they should put this one together with Kubrick's The Killing and Paths of Glory, Alain Corneau's Serie Noire, Peckinpah's The Getaway and Frears' The Grifters for a Jim Thompson box set. Shame Coup de Torchon is out of print...paranoid-knight2008 wrote:I e-mailed them about Michael Winterbottom's THE KILLER INSIDE ME over a month ago, and this is the reply I finally got:

Not sure if that's a yes or no, but I'm excited either way!

A perplexing Facebook response:Matt wrote:Something must have changed in the year since the Fop posted this because Criterion is the distributor listed for several of the Varda films available on Mubi, including Documenteur, Lion's Love, Oncle Yanco, and Black Panthers, all of which would make for a great "Agnes Varda in California" Eclipse set (provided they can also include Mur Murs). Everything else by Varda that they're listed as the distributor for was released in the 4 by Agnes Varda box set.The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote:So according to a compatriot of mine who went to an Agnes Varda screening at the American Cinematheque last night with a Q&A with Ms. Varda, she said that she's trying to get Criterion to put out "Mural Murals", "Lions Love", and a couple of her other films in this country and the Criterion isn't biting because they figure they're not very profitable. She says shes still trying though.
What exactly is Criterion doing with Varda's Lions Love? It's got a wacky C on Mubi.
Also, Criterion likes silents?Criterion wrote:Hmm... News to us! We'll take a look.

Excellent news!! Totally unexpected but massively welcome all the same - I'll take back every derogatory thing that I've said about Criterion and their Silent treatment the second these appear on the coming soon page.swo17 wrote:Criterion wrote:It is likely that PANDORA's BOX and PASSION OF THE JOAN OF ARC will make it to Blu-ray before too long, though they won't make 2010. 2011 is a possibility...
Maybe silent films on blu have been selling especially well? Most of the releases I'm familiar with were sort of a big deal, so maybe Criterion wants to catch that wave a bit.domino harvey wrote:If those sold well-enough to warrant a Blu-upgrade, why didn't they see fit to release more silents in the interim?
After Dark, My Sweet would be fine as well. I kind of forgot that was made into a movie.AfterTheRain wrote:Also, Paths of Glory wasn't originally a Jim Thompson work before its big screen treatment; it was a novel written by Humphrey Cobb. Still, it would be great to have it in the Criterion Collection.
Correct. Neither was The Killing...which in turn was based on a novel by Lionel White. Until he died, Thompson maintained he should have received more credit for The Killing than he actually received.AfterTheRain wrote:Also, Paths of Glory wasn't originally a Jim Thompson work before its big screen treatment; it was a novel written by Humphrey Cobb. While we're at it, Maggie Greenwald's The Kill Off is owned by an independent distributor who has licensed to Criterion before.Harmonov wrote:As I've said before, they should put this one together with Kubrick's The Killing and Paths of Glory, Alain Corneau's Serie Noire, Peckinpah's The Getaway and Frears' The Grifters for a Jim Thompson box set. I finally got to see this a few months ago on MGMHD. While it certainly hews close to the spirit of Thompson's novella, and in that sense it was enjoyable...the performances seemed overly over the top and spoiled it for me.John Cope wrote:This World, Then the Fireworks. It's an exceptional take on Thompson and also has been almost utterly neglected on DVD. I've been screening it for people via my tattered VHS for years.
Peckinpah's The Getaway is only interesting because of Peckinpah's involvement, but I remember it being a fairly uninteresting Steve McQueen/Ali McGraw vehicle. On the other hand, After Dark My Sweet is so far the best portrayal of Jim Thompson's literary noir vision...and on any given day it could well be The Grifters.MyNameCriterionForum wrote:>After Dark My Sweet< cough coughHarmonov wrote:As I've said before, they should put this one together with Kubrick's The Killing and Paths of Glory, Alain Corneau's Serie Noire, Peckinpah's The Getaway and Frears' The Grifters for a Jim Thompson box set.
