They should (IMO) repress titles that sell out well once the exclusivity window passes - nobody was ever promised these were limited FOR ALL TIME, but rather they are limited to X number of copies in this 3 year period.

Unfortunately due to complaints it seems that TT has decided that they won't be doing Encore editions anymore which is a shame. This is why we can't have nice things like Dual Format.

Even better : they should adapt their print run to the sales potential of the movie they're releasing. If your "limited edition" is still widely available 5 years after its release (so much that you have to heavily discount it to get rid of the remaining quantities), you vastly over-printed it. On the other end, if your 3000 copies are sold out in a week, maybe you should have done 5000 of them.

But I can understand how these figures can be hard to pin-point precisely in the current market. I'm quite sure surprises regarding sales figures happens more than expected.

The problem is their model is different from any other studio - they are paying UP FRONT for each copy, this is how Soundtrack licenses are done and thats the world they come from. So they can't just say "gee maybe we will sell 10k of this, lets splash out up front" The sell outs have to cover the titles that lose money, and the limited edition covers that, but people seem to have this idea that its limited for all time when it's always been quite clear that it was a 3 year exclusive window.

You mean like the time they said "gee maybe we will sell 5k of Vampires, lets splash out up front"? Also, things may work a certain way given the model they've chosen, but there's nothing preventing them from changing their model if they felt like it.

This is the future, swo, just remember that. All the other labels will be wanting to get on board with this soundtrack model. Just you wait!

If they really wanted to sell the soundtrack angle, why not include the actual soundtracks on a CD with the Blu-ray? That would at least justify their prices and would stand a far better chance of actually being listened to

Exactly. TT has a fundamental problem and they're not doing anything about it.

It's only a matter of time before Kino puts out an ex-TT Blu-ray from Fox or MGM and the problem will be dramatically illustrated.

Are all of their licenses expiring or something? It seems very odd that in the past two months or so TT has begun having these very random titles go on short-notice sales.

Most of the titles on sale are past the three year license window. They aren't likely to get re-issued anytime soon by the main studio that owns them (Fox, Sony or MGM), but TT has no reason to let the stock sit and take up space. Better to sell them at cost than not sell them at all.

I wonder if this means it's at all likely that Criterion, still unsure what to do with a features-less release, let the rights lapse (or if something similar might be happening with Take the Money and Run)

I'm disappointed they're the ones releasing Kiss of Death.

Pick up the UK Blu, it carries over the same commentary from the Fox DVD that'll no doubt pop up here.

Really? I think this is a pretty terrific slate. Two for the Road was recently restored, and Joan Micklin Silver's Chilly Scenes of Winter
is absolutely phenomenal. One of those titles I always thought would be a slam-dunk for Criterion, but I'd glad TT picked it up. It would be nice
to finally have its alternate Head Over Heels ending in a format that doesn't look like a cell phone recording of a VHS bootleg.

Excellent news about Chilly Scenes of Winter. A superb film, one of the very best of the 70's. Actually, as alluded to by beamish, this version of the film was released in the early 80's, a few years after the original run when it was entitled Head Over Heels and featured a different, extended ending (Chilly Scenes cuts that ending back to align the film more with the book that inspired it). Hopefully this Blu will feature those scenes from the first cut. Would love to see Twilight Time release John Heard's Mindwalk too which is in desperate need of a Blu upgrade or really any video representation at all. Seems like a film they might be interested in.
