Criterion releasing Dressed To Kill is really confusing to me, compared to say, The Black Stallion. The MGM Blu-Ray of The Black Stallion was barebones. But, even if you say Criterion's market is the US so ignore the Region B Arrow release, the MGM Blu-Ray of Dressed To Kill already had quite a number of extras, including a 45 minute Laurent Bouzereau documentary. DePalma doesn't do commentaries and I'm sure Criterion won't be including the R-rated cut (which I would have liked to see included on some release since the MGM DVD had included it for comparison) since they couldn't even bother to include the theatrical cut of The Last Picture Show, so beyond I guess a couple of interviews, I don't really get what they will be adding. According to DVDBeaver, the MGM & Arrow releases had essentially equivalent picture quality, so unless Criterion has an even newer transfer up their sleeve, it's not like the current release was lacking compared to anything else out there.

After what they said about passing on rereleasing Silence of the Lambs, they must have something they feel they can add to a Dressed to Kill release. (Even though Carrie needs a new Blu-ray more than Dressed to Kill.)

Edgar Wright was at Criterion earlier this year, maybe, like Blow Out's Noah Baumbach and Brian De Palma conversation, they recorded an Edgar Wright and Brian De Palma conversation.

I'm glad I didn't double dip on Dressed to Kill, because I'd be triple dipping on it soon.

I'd rather have Hi Mom! personally.

To me, Carrie seems more likely - given that they've released it previously on laserdisc and had posted a picture of it on Facebook.

Yeah; but Dressed to Kill fits in with the heavily armed woman featured in the New Year's drawing, so it's quickly becoming the consensus guess.

Nancy Allen specifically said her interview was for a Criterion release of Dressed To Kill.

There's an interview with Jonze and Mark Romanek in the Mark Romanek Director's Label DVD where Romanek states the project started when he was trying to put together a Criterion disc in the early 2000s but the project fell through for some reason.

More of just a general question; of all the Criterion's I've got since the Dual-format split back into seperate editions, all of them have menus that are a static image. Has this been the case for all the releases, and therefore is this further indicating them trying to find some (probably very small) way to cut costs (even a little bit)?

Nope, I've got a solid seven titles since August and none of them have any editing/video component short of a title and a photo on the menu.

Criterion used to regularly employ animated menus (this is all in regards to Blu-ray) - oftentimes quite elaborate (Makioka Sisters, Stagecoach, Mikado, Hollis Frampton, People on Sunday, etc). I've noticed quite a lot of the Dual Formats were static images with just music as well (and they were using Ian D Whelan - the menu animator - far less) - probably because they didn't feel the need to bother when it was all in just one package anyway (but they've done static menus for awhile now, just less frequently than they do now: see Kuroneko, Cul-de-Sac, most boxsets, Zatoichi, etc). I could imagine cutting down on animated menus would reduce costs, for something which most people probably don't care about. I'm sure they also got complaints from some that made the text difficult to read - since it was distracting. I really love Criterion's menus (at least their Whelan ones), as they tend to be unique and often quite a lot of fun (most of the Godard ones have been great; I think only his Vigo menu is bad/annoyingly repetitive). It would be sad to see them cut costs on the menu, but I guess I'd rather have a static menu with fun music (Every Man for Himself, Tootsie, Red River), than some of the super annoying menus most every other company puts out (if you ever watch a Looney Tunes disc, you'll want to hit the mute button immediately, lest you enjoy hearing a 3-second loop of the Looney Tunes theme played endlessly, or the absolute worst is MGM - who don't even have a menu screen! Everyone loves having to watch/pause the movie while toggling the sound options).

I suspect the animated menus will just be an occasional thing from here out, much like booklets, as they haven't abandoned them altogether (F for Fake was the most recent Whelan creation I know of, and by the looks of things, Cienaga, Autumn Afternoon, Hoop Dreams, Cries&Whispers, Watership Down, and Silence de la Mer are all animated - so perhaps they are starting to bring them back more regularly). I guess one can take a poll to find out how many of us would be willing to pay $5-$10 more per MSRP, if that meant booklets and fun menus for every release?

Does anyone know who has the rights to Anthony Minghella's Truly Madly Deeply? It's no longer listed on MGM's website, but I'm not sure who the present rightsholder would be. Hearing Alan Rickman speak fondly of the film recently reminded me what a great release it could be.

It's ultimately a BBC Film from 1990 (originally made for the broadcaster's Screen Two series then theatrically released), in fact it was thus classified as the very first production by BBC Films (the outfit is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year)...

Speedy will be showing at Tribeca this Wednesday. I suppose that bodes well for a release sooner this year rather than later. This is most likely that Carl Davis Facebook clue from a while ago, no? I'd hope this "all new soundtrack" employing "live turntable skills" from the Tribeca screening will stay far away from Criterion.

I'm assuming that since it's described as a "one-night only event" it probably won't be included on the Criterion. If it is, it will certainly be a secondary track that can be easily ignored.

I'm under 25, which makes the notion of DJ Z-Trip doing a score for "Speedy" appealing to me, mostly because of how I'd like to figure out how he'd translate work like this or this into a silent film score.

Too bad I'm not there, though. I do hope it'll be a secondary audio track, like Yo La Tengo's soundtrack for the Painlevé shorts.

Are Criterion still supposed to be preparing a Blu release of 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'? This seems to have been in the works for ever, but I haven't seen any mention of it for a long time now.

If ever Criterion do release De Palma's Carrie I hope they include the 4x3 open matte version that was released only on VHS as well.
