Flowers of Shanghai
Upgrade of Le Cercle Rouge
Upgrade of Pickup on South Street
A Jean Arthur movie: Although I think the window is almost closed for a release to come out of last May’s retrospective, the Kim Morgan essay from back then mentions enough intriguing titles for one more guess. There’s The More the Merrier, of course, but also The Whole Town’s Talking, Talk of the Town, and History Is Made at Night. FWIW, the last two are still playing on the Channel.

Someone said that a filmmaker he knows has until February to finish a supplement for Mirror, which makes me think it should be announced then (not that Criterion haven't recorded extras after announcing a film, but still)

Can we also use this thread to guess which title of Bressonaire's is the red herring? I'll go with Le Cercle Rouge

Ha! I'm floundering like everyone who'd have liked a New Year's drawing. I think my course will be to extrapolate and free-associate more from Channel stuff. The Channel's two favorite commenters, Imogen Sara Smith and Farran Smith Nehme, may have some input on choices, so I'm trying to catch up with their postings, along with the roundup of 2020 essays from the Channel newsletter that had all those links back in December. And there have been retrospectives of Joan Crawford (who still only has one title in the collection!), Mae West, and others worth mulling. Also, the last couple months have expanded possibilities to upgrades from Eclipse and titles from The World Cinema Project, so there's that. But it still comes down to what appeals on any given day....

Yes. But Losey/Pinter and that film deserve better. The commentary on that KL release is one of the most annoying and least informative of any I have ever heard. The transfer is OK.

Perhaps, but it was released within the last year and both companies aren't going to share the rights to it... Criterion and KL literally bid against each other for stuff like this

A bit of wishful thinking on my part then.

Would love to have those three Losey/Pinter gems in one release with proper extras.
To cowboydan: I laughed at Salo 3D. A friend of mine made fun of me for upgrading to the Salo blu. "Do you really need to see THAT in hi-def?" Lol.

Salo in 3D would look great... especially Renata Moar in 3D...
I would love Sandra - Visconti or above all Zurlini "La jeune fille à la valise" (aka La ragazza con la valigia) - A Spanish blu-ray (not totally legit) is around. Apparently it's sourced from the Mk2 DVD restoration (but not upscaled; although there are some E.E and video artefacts it's clearly a digital HD upgrade not upscaled).
But Mk2 master is old and would need to restored.
we need Criterion to release in blu-ray "Seduced And Abandoned" which has been released in Italian on blu-ray and restored but the encoding has just killed the restoration with some video filtering.
I have seen some screenshots/vidcaps of the "Mirror" Tarkovsky. Apparently it has just been released on blu-ray already in Russia ? it looks like a new 2020 restoration, not at all the Artificial Eye which looks like a DVD remastered to HD. So, is the "Mirror" new restoration already released on blu-ray ?
I was stunned by the transfer of "Stalker". It still looks not totally argentic and organic; but in comparison to the first Blu-Ray by Artificial Eye this is a significant improvement.
Apparently Tarkovsky's cinematography seems to escape from being "captured" (I'm okay with the sepia in comparison to the Potemkine Blu-Ray. That's just even "Solaris" has some blueish tint for the black & white scene (on DVD) so even if this is not a redux Wong Kar Wai, it's still difficult to know how it should look (fortunately there is the fantastic web site nostalghia)
and more Truffaut : "Les deux anglaises et le continent" is still planned by Criterion ?

I've waited for Sandra for years. It was restored in 2013 by Cineteca di Bologna, and exhibited in the section of Classics in the Venice Festival. No BluRay edition was realised in USA or UK to date.

First four are purely wishful thinking. Third Man because I've got my copy on eBay right now and it would be just my luck for a new announcement to knock down the final selling price.

They've had the rights forever and it used to be up on the Janus Hulu channel half a decade ago at least. It's been a while since they released more Truffaut (not that I'm complaining about that) but some have speculated that he could be next for a box set treatment, since Criterion owns the rights to more than a few unreleased films
