Meh, the Ride with the Devil cover as a whole looks to me like something from the Fake Criterion Cover thread. And something really bugs me about the Fugitive Kind cover. I like the overall concept, but while Brando is obviously a colorized photo, Magnani and Woodward look like cartoons. So does the background. Is it a major photoshop job? It brings back painful memories of Fanfan.

Guess I'm the only one who thinks all the covers are something awful.

Outrageous. The Summer Hours cover is easily one of the worst, most boring covers in the entire collection topping even A Christmas Tale for most uninspired. The Vivre sa vie cover is good, but I like the poster better. Then again, I like the thirds-design. And the cover for The Fugitive Kind is far from boring if you read Matt's post, it's actually quite clever; my favorite of the month.

That Ride With The Devil cover is atrocious, especially the kerning.

The Fugitive Kind is great, and its nice to see the weathered effect not overdone. I'm guessing there are some creases on the spine, which should look very interesting.

that's exactly what i thought, noting the 'creases' along the spine edge....brilliant! One of the best covers they've ever done imo. that one will be a must have - i'm almost hoping B&N waits till April for the next sale now!

Not sure i understand the fawning over the Godard, but i never do and to each their own. the other two are fine...not sure I really like Ride's....okay I guess.

glad i'm not the only one...and it hardly conveys the real essence of the film....total misfire. Looks like something an intern did on his lunch break because they forgot to submit one and had to do it last minute.

The reason i give summer hours 7/10 is because for me its quite a subtle and unusual cover for a DVD.
Christmas Tale is just ugly. Summer Hours has some beauty, softness and subtlety. Not every cover has to be bold or obvious.
In terms of aesthetics i could compare the summer hours to Marienbad (which i also liked a lot) for a subtle, understated yet appropriate effect.

I simply don't find the Summer Hours cover to be visually intriguing; it's just a collage of some faded images and no more interesting that a Christmas catalogue cover or something along those lines. I didn't notice the house before, which gives a little more intrigue, but it's still not enough to have interested me if I knew nothing about the movie, Criterion, Assayas, etc. Personally, I think the Last Year at Marienbad cover succeeds as minimalist design, a play on the title card, and as a physically interesting design as it has raised text on the cover and the spine—far more intriguing to me than the Summer Hours cover, but to each their own.

As of January 15th, this is the latest e-mail that Criterion has been sending out to people who have written them about the cases...

Thank you for your case replacement order! Please note that we are short on stock of cases and expect more to arrive within the next two weeks. Once they do, we will ship them out through First Class/Priority USPS Postal Service, so you should expect to receive the order within 4-6 weeks from now.

a geographical oddity: two weeks from everywhere!

I made my PayPal order for 7 replacement cases on 12/14/09, but heard no confirmation from Criterion as to whether they received my order. I sent them an e-mail asking for any idea on the status of my order on 12/27/09, and got a response on 1/4/09. This is what I received:

Thank you for your email and patience!

We did receive your payment successfully, however, we did not have the BOTTLE ROCKET replacement cases available until right before the Holidays. Now that we are back in the office, I'd be happy to mail the cases out to you!

By the way, it is so very nice to see all the plastic cases lined up next to each other. They do look so much better than the thin digipacks.

I had the same experience as well. I ordered on 12/11 and never heard back, so I shot off an email on 1/11 just to make sure everything was okay. My stuff hasn't come yet though, I got the "two weeks" answer.

Emailed on 1/11
Nothing so far.

Is there any sort of logic behind the Eclipse artwork? Some of the sets use the screenshots and the others use the white-space format. Personally, I prefer the well-chosen images from the films, particularly with the Larisa Shepitko and Sam Fuller sets.

Just an FYI, I got these over the weekend, so they have their shipment in and are currently fulfilling these orders.
