Now it says 9 disks, and $23.99 on my order. That's as low as it gets, I guess...

Looks good and from the look of that spine, maybe thinpacks. Add to that Matador and Law of Desire as exclusives and top it off with remastered prints for both Women on the Verge and All About My Mother (not to mention that bonus disc with 3 featurettes, even though I think they will amount to interviews only which I'm not complaining) and I am sold on this new set! I will wait for reviews, of course but consider me very interested!

But I wonder if they are giving Matador and Desire some worthwhile extras, them being some of his earlier features and the ones that put him on the map, so to speak. I would love to see what the trailers look like since I've never seen them anywhere. Also, it seems strange that from the 2 MGM titles they are including here -- Live Flesh and Women on the Verge -- only the latter got the remastering prize. Maybe the former looked decent enough, who knows. But still, I wish they would state in their announcement the full specs for these 4 titles. And just what those featurettes are all about!

Been doing some imdb clicking about those MIA Almodovar titles on R1 land and came up with this:

Kika - OOP, formerly distributed by Image Entertainment

High Heels -- it's anyone's guess as to who owns the rights now

Tie me up! Tie me down! -- see above

Labyrinth of Passion
-- see above

Pepi, Luci, Bom -- see above

Dark Habits
and What Have I Done To Deserve This are currently being distributed rather lacklusterly by Wellspring. Not to mention a truckload of early shorts that have yet to see the light of day on the digital format.

Can you spot a tendency here? I wonder if Sony will grab the rights to more Almodovar treats for a Viva Pedro round 2 next year... Pandora's gift, indeed.

And speaking of which, here's Tráiler para amantes de lo prohibido in 3 parts, courtesy of You Tube: 1 - 2 - 3.

edit: just finished watching that for the first time and I loved it! It's hilarious stuff, this! I actually think it's one of the best thing he's ever done.

The good news for now is that Law of Desire, Matador and Bad Education will all be released in their NC-17 versions. No news however about the extras for the aforementioned first two and what those featurettes will be like.

Even more news from here:

[quote]While other boxed sets featuring Almodóvar's films have been released in the past, this set's bonus disc about the Spanish director makes it the most comprehensive yet, Rashba said.

The additional disc has three featurettes: “Deconstructing Pedro,â€

An Amazon buyer indicates potential purchasers that the DVD for Dark Habits is cut. Here's what he has to say about it:
I must foremost thank Wellspring, the distributor of this film, for releasing this Almodvar masterpiece on DVD..however..I am not sure who was behind this release..but, being familiar with the original release of this film..I was shocked and perplexed for the fact that this DVD issue is an EDITED version, cutting off approx. 15 mins of this film. I dont know WHy they did this, or what...I felt they cut off some important scenes..

#1..Yolana Bell's opening number, where we first see her performing..she did a song called "Dime" (which is in fact, a Spanish version of Morris Albert's "Feelings")

#2. a conversation among the Redeeming sisters and a redeemed girl from the past, where they run into each other on the Sister's outdoor stand, where they sell cakes, flowers and peppers.

#3. The Sisters' explaining to nuns from their mother chapter, that they had been robbed, talking it over the punch bowl. Also cutting off a funny line, where the sisters gossip over a younger nun, saying that "she's far to pretty for this vocation, but time will take care of that"

#4. A small bit of Sister Rat From Sewer's opening speech before Yolanda's performance for the Mother Superior's birthday party. in this DVD issue, they go straight to Sister Rat talking on stage, completely taking out her peeking out from the curtain and quieting down the crowd.

but ultimately, I am happy that this movie saw the light of day AGAIN, it had been out of print on video for years..so, its a great buy, but be bewared that it's edited. If u have never seen this movie before, then it wont be a problem. Hardcore fans like myself might have a problem.
The page on Imdb.com states the running time as 114 minutes and this Digitally Obsessed review indicates that the Wellspring DVD is only 100 minutes long, which corroborates the fact that it does seem to be cut. I can only think that it must have been for music copyright and censorship reasons seeing that they cut the musical numbers out of it and other dirtier parts.

Anyway, consider yourselves warned. And I do hope that Sony will come to the rescue of this and other MIA Almodovar titles in the future. Let's all hope that the upcoming collection is a big seller.

Has anyone seen the new R2UK editions of Kika and Pepi, Luci, Bom? I'm on the verge of buying them, but I'd like an opinion or two. Is Pepi just a repackaged disc from the Almodovar Vol 1 box set?

That's my impression, because I've seen ads showing the covers of each of the individual releases with a mention at the bottom, "Also available in the boxed sets Almodovar Vol. 1 and Vol. 2."

Is the disc of Talk to Her not the NC-17 version as well? If it is the R version what is the point of buying this set? It is unfair to censor his work because of its suggestive sexual material simply because Americans still think they are Victorians.

I'm sure America's moral hypocrisy is somehow to blame for his being misinformed as well.

to the people getting the boxset for 23.99, is it possible to change quantities without messing up the great price? If so, I'd like to pay someone like 35 for it. or exactly what it costs them, If they're nice.

Why is it that this box isn't up for pre-order at DVDPlanet or DeepDiscountDVD just yet?

I was planning to get it for my birthday, with DDD's lovely June sale. I have a good five months to worry about it, but still, for such a massive release, and with a week away until it is released, I'm not seeing much on it.

Why don't you write to them directly? And I'm sure they will put up what you're looking for in a week or two.

This is a 4 stars set which could've easily reached 5 stars status if:

- the subtitles were white instead of yellow;
- they didn't stupidly drop all the extras from the All About My Mother original disc;
- they could've slapped a few extras on Women on the Verge, Matador and Law of Desire.

Apart from that, great set and that bonus disc looks really promising. Oh, and I disagree with Gary: I think this new transfer of Women on the Verge looks way better than the R2 Optimum. But all in all, I'm still getting it. The image is what counts and all the transfers are the best of any region, so far.

Now bring on Volume 2!
