That's basically how I feel about the DVD-R system; glad that some of these movies are finally available, but miffed and PO'd about how it's being approached.

Has anyone ordered
Remember the Night? A poster on the IMDb provided
this link where someone at a message forum claims that the TCM DVD is an actual DVD and not a DVD-R! Can anyone else verify this? If this is true, then it's fantastic news!

I'm keen, David, but a little queasy about the "Snowflake" material. How bad is it? This kind of thing can destroy a film for me - even Sullivan's Travels suffers from it. A blind spot of Sturges's ?

What is the point of two studios teaming up for something where you need less people to produce the items than actual dvds?

Well, if the Warner Archive doesn't keep them in business, that would.

TCM is rescuing Hathaway's

Don't hold your breath since their release of The House Across the Bay from the same studio (Westchester Films) is just awful and on DVD-R. Criterion licensed Stagecoach from them, so it depends on how much effort they put into it...

You'd never guess from TCM's own web site that this collection is not available now...

What splendid news - thanks! Do you, or anybody else, know if this release will be a pressed DVD or a DVD-R? I strongly disapprove that TCM only let these facts leak through in a rather haphazard way. You literally have to check Internet forums everyday lest this info escape you.

I think one of my posts got deleted somehow. Anyway, the upshot was that Lou Lumenick et. al. reported a deal between TCM and Castle Hill / Westchester Films to release "at least a dozen" films, of which this was apparently the first. Not sure who Westchester Films is or why this video master was so crummy. Criterion and VCI have released decent looking stuff from Castle Hill, so I guess TCM is just taking whatever element is on the shelf. Here's hoping
History Is Made at Night did, in fact, go to Criterion.

Unlike all of the TCM/Universal Discs, this is part of a Westchester Films release schedule, and the first,
House Across the Bay, was DVD-R. This is almost certainly going to be DVD-R as well. I hope the print TCM gets from Westchester is better than the last one.

I remember renting the old VCI disc of Sundown, and if it's any consolation, the movie is pretty bad. The African native stuff is especially cringeworthy, as I recall.

Westchester Films bought Castle Hill Productions last year. I hope that we don't see titles like You Only Live Once, Blockade or any of the Kazan films as part of this deal. It seems fairly safe to assume Criterion has all the Caidin titles that were with Warners. (inc. History is Made at Night)
