Well. It's a sad day when Mathieu Amalric can beat Godard to a Competition berth.

Godard asked for UCR, apparently because he likes the theatre better. Still, UCR definitely more exciting than the main Competition, again. Hopefully the Director's Fortnight is even better.

Where the hell is the Tarr (and Sokurov's Faust for that matter)?

Obviously delighted though to see Oliveira's Angelica listed for UCR. Far as I was aware he only statred shooting that in March.

What? Sokurov's doing Faust? That sounds good!

The Main Competition looks appealing to me only for the Asian films as well.

Is Burnt by the Sun 2 the first sequel to be in the main competition? I can't recall another one off the top of my head.

It joins the esteemed company of Far Away, So Close! and Shrek 2.

I'm not gonna dig through all sixty-whatever lineups, but The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat was in competition in 1974 (!!!), and this was in the '88 lineup. Personally I would put 2046 and Manderlay in the sequel column too. But it turns out Bellocchio's Enrico IV is not, in fact, a sequel.

So, this is what, 4 US filmmakers in the whole festival?

Three years after Jeon Do-yeon wins Best Actress for a Lee Chang-dong film (Miryang), both Jeon (The Housemaid) and Lee (Poetry) return to competition at Cannes. I'm thrilled to see more Korean films reaching these levels of world-wide recognition, especially when they're not Park Chan-wook films.

I assume Jeon must be the wife in the Housemaid re-make. I have been impressed by the IM Sang-soo films I've seen -- so this re-make might actually turn out well.

And LEE Chang-dong hasn't yet made anything but excellent films....

I hope Poetry (about which I know nothing) finally gets the rest of the world to notice Lee.

Also note that Hong Sang-soo's latest (Ha Ha Ha) will be in the Un Certain Regard section, giving the world a(nother) chance to meet and appreciate Moon So-ri, the best actress you've probably never seen (not you, MEK, but the generic "you".)

I must say, there's remarkably little in there to excite me at the moment. Some hidden gems may doubtless be lurking, but one expects more. Now, if Malick, Tarr, Sokurov and Gallo were the four late additions, that might turn things around...

I must say, also, it's nice to see that Kiarostami has been enjoying a holiday in Italy. Along with Weerasethakul and Mikhalkov, is this perhaps the year of the collaborator?

Good Lord, here's the Russian poster. It looks like one of those old Soviet war films, only gritter and uglier.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mikhalkov's next film turns out to be The Fall of Grozny, about Putin's wise leadership during the Second Chechen War. Or maybe a contemporary updating of Pyriev's Party Card. Or maybe a Russian TV melodrama entitled FSB Agents Also Cry...

At least that's the direction he seems to be heading.
