One thing to bear in mind is that recent Criterion buying is probably more "blind" than usual because so many Studio Canal-licensed titles are going out of print, prompting people to make hastier purchases because it may be their last chance to get something for a reasonable price.

My Gervaise and Last Holiday purchases, for example. I also would not have bought the Stagecoach and M Blu-rays this year (though I know the films well) had they not recently been heavily discounted at Barnes and Noble, as was the Oshima set).

Stagecoach - A
M - A
Oshima's Outlaw Sixties - B
Gervaise- C
Last Holiday - C

I only rarely blind buy Criterions since I can generally rent them first. I will blind buy some MoCs though since I don't have that option. Nearly all of my last 5 purchases were made in the last week and a half due to OOP announcements. You will probably get much different answers to your survey if you conduct it again a month from now.

With the exception of film festivals held by embassies, which unfortunately have quite slim pickings. No theatres really show these types of films, and same with rentals (only films you can buy/view here are Hollywood and commercial local films).

Chantal Akerman (Eclipse Set) - A
Last Year at Marienbad (BD) - A
*Pierrot le fou (BD) - A
*The Seventh Seal (BD) - A
The Third Man (BD) - B

*I'm including these two discs I got for Christmas, since I asked for them specifically and the people who gave them to me had absolutely no idea what they were. If it's relevant to your research, note that this list might look rather different if I had regular income or disposable wealth, and would most certainly look different if you took rentals into account.

I meant to buy some today, but there's been a holdup in my plans... and I'm leaving off a dupe that I bought as a gift. If I'd bought the discs today my answers would've been pretty much all As.

Ran - A
Make Way for Tomorrow - C
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy - C
Vivre sa vie - A
Le trou - C

One note: you may know this, but you're probably going to run into some selection bias here; a high percentage of the people on these here boards are involved enough with film (often professionally), so they're likely to have known about the films long before Criterion existed.

I almost never blind buy, but if you had a category for "I've seen it before, but it was a long time ago and I wasn't really all that familiar with the movie" then Stagecoach and 8 1/2 would both be in that category.

Out of curiosity- let's say I buy the Walkabout rerelease, and I've already seen Walkabout, but only via the previous Criterion- would that be an A or a C?
