I don't remember if I had trouble watching this disc when I bought it, but for some reason my copy doesn't want to play around the 9 second mark, up to about the 1:48 mark. It stops at the same point on all three of my players.

Drop a line to Second Run at [email protected] and I'm sure they'll accomodate with a replacement...

Trailer for a new restoration, which was shown at the Film at Lincoln Centre in July and is showing on Mubi from this Thursday. It's also available on Vimeo on demand via Fixafilm: "The film was shot on 35mm and unfortunately the negative and DI files had been lost. The print that remained was brought to Warsaw to be scanned and graded for posterity under the supervision of our CTO Łukasz Ceranka. The project is curated by Daniel Bird in the framework of Hamo Bek-Nazarov Project and financially supported by Kino Klassika Foundation."

That's great news. Even with the new restoration I posted above, I didn't think there was much of a chance for a Blu-Ray upgrade but I'm very glad that it's happening.

Is Saakyan's subsequent film, I’m Going to Change My Name, available anywhere?

"As it stands, even if we just consider MAYAK, she made – without question – one of the finest films to have materialised so far this century. A work of art and a treasure."
