Wouldn't 3 versions a disk be around 5 hours of 1080p each? Not to mention the possible other extras? I guess there's no way to really leave any of the versions out though to keep a decent bitrate though. It'll still be a day 1 purchase for me.....

I think I trust the guys running the DVD company to know whether or not the average bitrate is sufficient.

I'm assuming the extras are all just ports of the existing edition, but it would be nice - on the disc or in the book - for there to be some sober analysis of the aspect ratio controversy, since I'm sure the majority of purchasers will have no idea why they're getting the option.

Being black & white and, for half of them, 1.37 will help a lot.

Even if all the video extras are ports, I'd be really surprised if there weren't new things in the booklet- that's where I'd expect an aspect ratio explanation to show up (a lot of the booklets have at least a blurb about it at the end.)

I wonder if MoC will be able to get the excellent 'Reconstructing Evil' documentary; I think I read somewhere that Universal couldn't put it on the earlier release for legal reasons.

For this particular DVD company, I do. I 'm not so sure that I would say that as a blanket statement about all DVD companies, though.

I'm boycotting this release. It should be clear to anyone that Touch of Evil is supposed to be shown in 1.66.

Something I don't understand: why doesn't Universal release this as a Studio Canal Collection-release? Not that I am complaining that Eureka is doing it, but it would make more sense.

I used to think that Universal and Studio Canal where part of the same company because Universal often distributes Studio Canal-releases in the country where I live. I guess I am wrong about that.

They are partners in the Benelux and France.

Yes, they actually were both formerly part of Vivendi. Canal + still is, but Vivendi sold most of Universal to GE in 2004 (which is when NBC Universal came into being) and just this year sold off the remainder. Sorry for sounding like a jerk about it. I had forgotten all about Vivendi.

The documentaries found on the Universal 50th Anniversary DVD release are essentially the "Reconstructing Evil" documentary split into two parts and slightly re-edited (I seem to recall only a few seconds were eliminated outright).

My body involuntarily reacted to this news with something between a laugh and a moan. This made my day. God bless you, MoC.

I think that 6 versions versions is a bit excessive, i would prefer the disc space to be utilized for a higher bitrate and more HD extras.

I don't know if 6 versions is too much really, I think the problem more is that David Hare and others proved quite clearly that widescreen cuts out specific lighting effects and other things, making it clear that Welles very likely intended this for 4:3. So including the widescreen on the Blu seems kinda like a waste of space, especially as Uni will no doubt do their own Blu in the US which would be widescreen only. I think those 2 disks could be better utilized spreading the 3 cuts over them plus the numerous extras... But of course this is all moot currently seeing as MoC aren't working on it until Phaidon cease using the MoC name
