lol, what a contrast, you two.
for whatever reason Talk to Her is the only Almodovar i've even remotely liked (i know, i know, i'm some kind of heathen) so i doubt i'd be into this one, and none of the promotional material has piqued my interest in the slightest.
but i had to chime in cuz i thought that OGF diss was exceedingly random.

Two recent films are cited by wigwam as exercising a form of style as substance. One did it well, the other did not, according to the member who has seen both films. There is nothing random about that, cuz

you're right, "random" was a misnomer. rather, i meant that wigwam seemed to be stretching a bit to find a way to work in an OGF diss.domino harvey wrote:Two recent films are cited by wigwam as exercising a form of style as substance. but i could be totally wrong, maybe once i've seen I'm So Excited maybe i'll be like, "this is what Refn wanted to do but failed!"

I'd say in those ten years you have at least two masterpieces though I don't know how you are disagreeing with me (I actually find Talk to Her to be the worst of his films I've seen).

That (and Bad Education) was the one I was thinking of so I guess I don't have a refrain.

Thank you! I miss the days when he was truly crazy and subversive. Some people might balk at the somewhat crude execution of his very first few features, but they are fun and wildly over the top even by today's standards. Personally I adore Matador and Law of Desire, where he started to become a more polished stylist but still pushed the envelope in terms of content and tone. The opening "mirror" sequence of Law of Desire is just plain unforgettable, and I love how he cheekily appropriates footage from Bava's Blood and Black Lace at the opening of Matador.david hare wrote:God knows the world right now needs all the sort of stylish coke fuelled razzing the Old Almodovar could dish up in this appalling era of numbing PC, LGBT madness and fascists masquerading as democratic governments all over the planet.
P.S.--If your first Almodovar is a film like Talk to Her, you're only cheating yourself.

Reminded me of poor man's La Cage a Folles or Almodovar channeling Tyler Perry. I liked the stylistic approach, but agree that the BROAD comedy is absurdly lame, and the whole thing just goes absolutely nowhere.
