Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Since others have pointed out that the angels in the water are most likely Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Donkey Skin, I'm pretty sure the angel with the puffy black thing around its neck is referring to Demy's Lola.

Not surprised they've gone for It's a Wonderful Life, the current disc being fairly awful.
Never seen it, but someone elsewhere suggested The Straight Story?domino harvey wrote:What's the deer behind the bush?

This might just be wishful thinking, but could the spot of red in the middle of the picnic be a reference to this moment in Le Boucher?

Hope so, if only because I think Kalat would be up for a commentary for it.NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Is that a Sadako Ringu hairdo at the picnic?

I think that the angel with the bell could very well be Lars Von Trier's Breaking the Waves.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
There would certainly be room for a wealth of information for a commentary track there about the various attempts to do a sequel from the faithful (The Spiral, released at the same time as the first Ring film and sticking closely to the Koji Suzuki follow up, which is more of a medical thriller than a horror film) to the completely invented 'new' Ring 2 created to keep the series in the horror vein after The Spiral bombed, to the US remake and similar Nakata-helmed sequel to the US remake.EddieLarkin wrote:Hope so, if only because I think Kalat would be up for a commentary for it.NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Is that a Sadako Ringu hairdo at the picnic?

One very awkward, wishful thinking guess:
Hiding deer = Frightened stag = Vredens Dag

Pretty sure that's referencing Demy's Donkey Skin...Minkin wrote:And perhaps I'm seeing things in my tiredness, but is that The Tingler wrapped around one of the angels?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.

Based on what has been said so far in this thread, this is what people are guessing. Two things that don't seem to be accounted for are the two candies(?) next to Ringu, and a cross on the cliff wall.

CriterionCast absolutely got one thing wrong (only one you say derisively)... that is not Tootsie having a picnic. That would be Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run. And as for the four "beatles" approaching the picnic, I am very doubtful Criterion could get their hands back on that title. I suspect it is indeed Saul Bass' "Phase IV"- ants approaching a picnic works well visually.
Any thoughts on if the female at the picnic is indeed a Ringu figure? I know it is not Janet Margolin paired with Woody Allen's TTMAR. But with the blood in front of her, it reminds me of Rae Dawn Chong in Quest for Fire- there's a possibility, her name even has a wordplay with the context of this drawing's choice of red.

The candies are Sidney Pollack's Tootsie.

Couldn't the California Raisin be for The Big Chill, since those stupid ass commercials featuring them when I was a kid had them singing "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and that song is featured prominently on the TBC soundtrack?

Sadako has some discarded Tootsie roll wrappers next to her, so Tootsie (duh).

Brilliant! I can't tell if those are Tootsie roll wrappers or not, although the visual of Sadako eating candy while fulfilling the curse of killing makes me want to laugh.CSM126 wrote:Sadako has some discarded Tootsie roll wrappers next to her, so Tootsie (duh).

What? The escapee is Riot in Cell Block 11 for sure (look at the number) and those creatures are clearly not ants.britcom68 wrote:That would be Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run. Now that I've thought about it, I'm going to guess that the figure we're guessing is Sadako from Ringu, is actually Truffaut's Wild Child.

You guys sure devoured that picture this morning. I expect to wake up to at least 15 new Criterion hints every morning this year.
I'm not entirely sure that Paramount would part with it, but what's up with the digs at It's a Wonderful Life? Saccharine indeed!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I can see Paramount licensing IaWL. Probably "non-exclusive" license like Days of Heaven and Benjamin Button for one thing. And for another, I'm sure they'd keep their own disc on the market. Your average Joe will go shopping, see the Paramount disc for ten bucks and the Criterion for forty and grab the cheaper of the two. A Criterion edition would really only be for hardcore fans of the film, hardcore fans of Criterion, and people with an obsessive compulsion to buy every single spine number regardless of their personal feeling towards the film.Jeff wrote:I think that's actually more likely.Harmonov wrote:Couldn't the California Raisin be for The Big Chill, since those stupid ass commercials featuring them when I was a kid had them singing "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and that song is featured prominently on the TBC soundtrack?

Altman's Kansas City might be a fit for the jazz combo. Someone on a different site suggested the angels were "God moving on the face of the waters", a clue for Heat, which is such a good idea that I may have to accept it as fact.

The notorious "Mister Lime" has said over at Kramerica Industries that Riot in Cell Block 11 (which was initially a Republic title) did not go to Olive, and had in fact been "acquired by another company."

If it was a clue for Heat, it would be depicting literally anything else.
