Between the two recent videos he directed for Joanna Newsom, costar of Inherent Vice, and also his directing the Jonny Greenwood documentary Junun, with Greenwood being the composer of Inherent Vice's score, that film is turning into a major wishlist pick film for some multi-disc deluxe box set type of release. It was anyway--one of my favorite modern directors adapting a book by one of my favorite modern authors and co-starring one of my favorite modern musicians... It's like PTA made Inherent Vice just for me.

(And yes, before someone says so, to call Junun a "Jonny Greenwood documentary" is reductive and needlessly dismissive of the Indian musicians, who are the real stars of that film. All the same, Greenwood did Vice's score solo.)

I'd rather see a version made by Francis Ford Coppola-he published an excerpt of his script from the 90's in his literary magazine ZOETROPE: ALL-STORY a while back, and it was excellent.

Has anyone picked up George Toles' recent book on Anderson yet? I've read the Amazon preview pages, and it looks quite promising, focusing in particular on Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, and The Master as a (very) loose trilogy. Toles (an academic and frequent collaborator of Guy Maddin) is especially interested in absent or suppressed mothers in Anderson's works, as opposed to the more frequently covered ground of surrogate or actual father/son relations in his films. I'm hoping my local library will pick up a copy, because so far this looks like one of the more interesting entries in the Contemporary Film Directors series from Illinois UP.

I hadn't heard of that -- thanks for the recommendation.

I'd also highly recommend Jason Sperb's excellent book on PTA's films (the awkwardly-titled Blossoms and Blood: Postmodern Media Culture and the Films of Paul Thomas Anderson). It's rather critical of certain aspects of PTA's first few films, and I don't always find myself in agreement, but Sperb is a very good critic nonetheless and his arguments are pretty sound and insightful. He's very fond of PDL and TWBB. The book ends with a brief dissection of The Master, which had just come out.

Wow. Valentine is really something special. Feels like the Demme tribute we don’t deserve, but we absolutely need.

Huh, I'd never heard Haim before, and now I've bought their record, so it accomplished that goal. That second song is really phenomenal- I particularly enjoyed Este Haim's very silly guitar (well, bass, but same idea) faces.

Same. Going to be playing (likely both) records nonstop over the next few weeks I’m sure.

Remarkably, the double album vinyl is only like $11.50 on amazon right now, and it comes with the record on mp3

I can't get enough of the first song, Right Now. And Esme's bass face. Bought the CD.
