The in-character commentary is amazing. Almost as funny as the film imo.

"Look how young we are" sticks out from memory.

I watched the Quiet Riot documentary currently airing on Showtime, and there's a scene where the drummer is going through all the line-up changes. At one point he mentions that at one time one of their lead singers was in the film, as part of Howard Hesseman's band.

This must have been why the four of them sued Vivendi a while back. Interesting that Reiner’s Castle Rock got a huge influx of cash to develop new feature films; none of his films from the last 20+ years have performed well at all.

I suppose there's plenty of material to mine about aging rockers

Glad they got it back but wondering what kind of strings they had to pull to get it.

Bleeker Street has US distribtuion now on the original and the upcoming sequel. Most Bleeker Street stuff is put out on home video by Decal now (which is them and Neon), so probably same process as stuff that's been coming from Neon.

The guitars in the “these go to 11” scene could probably have paid off the original filming budget

..Patton Oswalt? Why Patton Oswalt? Criterion, you are so awkward.

I used to have the MGM DVD, with the in-character commentary wearing thin a bit at times but works. They had a funny thing over the menu which I suspect won’t survive its way here. The other commentary with the three is what I really am looking forward to with this. And the deleted scenes, wish those came with commentary too.

And from the days before Criterion discs were non-anamorphic, so they’d be windowboxed on widescreen TVs. (I think Insomnia was their first anamorphic disc.)

Spinal Tap's special features have been updated with the length of the outtakes and add two additional extras
The Cutting Room Floor, featuring ninety-eight minutes of outtakes
Excerpts from The Return of Spinal Tap (1992)
Interviews with the band for its 2009 Back from the Dead album

Nice additions! I don’t know if anyone else went to go see the re-release in theaters this past weekend, but at the end of the movie there were restoration notes and it called out that both Bleecker and Criterion worked on the 4K restoration from the original 16mm print.

It was also interesting seeing that the original blue Embassy Pictures logo was replaced by an updated Bleecker Street logo (I personally hate to say the original production studio logo removed from a movie). Overall though I would say the restoration looked really good and healthy, and that it makes me even more excited for this release.

Hey, does anyone know if there's a problem with the stills gallery/captures on the Spinal Tap review? The brightness and contrast seem way, way too dark compared with what I'm seeing on the disc and the sample shots on the Criterion site. Some of the images are barely visible.

It's the HDR to SDR conversion and the tone mapping. I know they come out dark and I've looked at other options, but admit I'm not sure the best way to handle it. There used to be a message that popped up, though just now just realized it isn't anynore. But yes, it won't look the same on your screen.

I found the MadVR + MPC-HC tonemapping to be the most convincing to my eyes. What are you using ?

Is this because of that one user on the BR forum who is convinced that the new restoration is wrong and looks Ritrovata'd (even though it doesn't)?
