This was certainly a brutal film, but I assume it was thoroughly researched and accurately represented the violence and prejudice of the time. During this period, the Tasmanian Aboriginal population was wiped out. I thought it somewhat similar to the Rolf De Heer films from a couple of decades ago that also focused on the experience of the First Peoples in the 19c (with Kent's films also showing the attitudes towards convicts, particularly the Irish). I can see why some found it a difficult watch though.
