I LOVE the duller palette on the new Criterion. Cropping doesn't bother me really if at all.
We set up the framing using a SMPTE framing chart for 35mm and 1.85 (attached). While it appeared that the older transfer was zoomed out slightly less, our version is 100% accurate to the chart.
Furthermore, it's worth noting that director Amy Heckerling had not been involved in any aspect of the older transfer but did approve this framing, color, and all other elements of the Criterion release.
Overall, the difference is minor and the range of any discrepancies is similar to what you might see in a theater screening.
Sounds like a rock solid response.yoloswegmaster wrote: Tue Apr 27, 2021 5:57 pm Someone on the blu forums emailed Criterion regarding the cropping, and this is what they had to say:

Baffling that someone who works for Vinegar Syndrome (of all the boutiques) and has Projectionist in his Twitter bio seemingly doesn't grasp that a release that shows slightly more image info than another isn't necessarily correct.yoloswegmaster wrote: Tue Apr 27, 2021 7:45 pm According to the geniuses over on Reddit, this restoration is "embarrassing".
The only thing "embarrassing" is people still believing that DVDBeaver take accurate screencaps.yoloswegmaster wrote: Tue Apr 27, 2021 7:45 pm According to the geniuses over on Reddit, this restoration is "embarrassing".
