This is such a great film. One thing I don’t see discussed above that I thought was particularly witty was the use of editing. The film starts off with a ton of jump cuts via zooms in the hip hop coded style of the time. It’s a cool that feels like a parody of either Fishbourne’s self perception or the ‘cool’ films made following Spike Lee’s ascension. There’s intense beat after intense beat then we get to Goldblum who’s cut Leave it to Beaver ready. The film goes on mixing so many editing styles together as the primary way of conveying emotion. Outside Oshima I can’t think of a narrative artist who conveyed everything with editing like this.
