Since Red Envelope (Netflix) co-produced the theatrical reissue with Janus, I wonder if they might have some kind of bare-bones Netflix-exclusive disc available this month.

My thought was that maybe it was coming from HVE. But I can't find it available for preorder anywhere. So maybe it is some sort of Netflix exclusive. Very odd.

This is a surprising move. I thought for sure that the two French films would be packaged together. This certainly bodes well for more potential shorts (and online price probably won't exceed $10 per film).

I wonder if there will be an option to buy all three together as well -- like the Rebel Samurai titles. It would make a lot of sense, and bring the overall price down much further.

The last time (as far as I remember) we got something in the press release that didn't immediately go to the website, it was a re-pressing of a catalogue title (Traffic), and a Collector's Set (Olivier). Anybody think its possible that these three shorts will NOT have spine numbers, and instead be something else entirely?

The CAT numbers for these follow exactly the CAT numbers for the two releases that have been officially announced...although anything's possible.

Am I the only one who sees the influence of The Red Balloon on The 400 Blows? All that running around the streets of Paris, with extended tracking shots, etc. Lamorisse had his camera on the streets years before Truffaut. I'd be interested to know what the Cahiers du Cinema guys thought of TRB.

I don't know about the younger critics at Cahiers, but Bazin loved it. The film inspired one of his most ambitious ontological diatribes, The Virtues and Limitations of Montage. I wonder what he would have thought about Hou's tribute - or Hou in general for that matter. Anyway, a snippet:

Ballon Rouge is a tale told in film, a pure creation of the mind, but the important thing about it is that this story owes everything to the cinema precisely because, essentially, it owes it nothing.

What a fantastic movie that is. A very lovely capture of 1950s Coney Island coming to life through a boy's eyes. He's on the run thinking he has killed his brother and Coney Island becomes his new world. Beautiful stuff.

videoeta.com lists "Paddle to the Sea," "The Red Balloon," and "The White Mane" all as getting separate releases by the Criterion Collection on April 29 (and with a list price of only 14.95 USD). There's nothing on there about a packaged set of those three. I don't know how reliable videoeta.com is, or even if my news is old news, but as of this posting (3:00 PM Pacific time), there's nothing on Criterion's website about any of those three.

Edit: Sorry, looking up a few posts now, I see that my "news" really is old news. My apologies.
