"Fanfan la Tulip" is scheduled to run at Film Forum from July 21st thru August 3rd. Discuss.
On another note, Film Forum's updated their Repertory Schedule thru mid-October, with retrospectives on Frank Tashlin (including a one-week run of "The Girl Can't Help It"), Kenji Mizoguchi and Monty Python; plus runs of "Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie," "California Split" and a "Summer Swashbucklers" festival. No details yet on which films are being included in each series.

Does California Split have to be edited for a theatrical showing?

The
re-release poster for
Fanfan la Tulipe, slightly altered, will make a lovely DVD cover.

Would a retrospective possibly indicate or lead to a boxset release? I'd love to get three or four of Mizoguchi's titles boxed up in a nice CC package a la Bergman and Dreyer.

I just saw the BFI's new print of The Fallen Idol and it's an astonishing film. One of the great childhood movies, not only getting a fine performance from the lad, but impressive in the way Graham Greene's script absolutely gets into the mindset and logic of a child. The effortless shifts between tension, humour and pathos show for all the world to see what an immense director Carol Reed was. How this was left off the BFI's Top 100 list I have no idea. Actually I do, but never mind that now. A must-see or must-rent, at the very least.

Looks like Alberto Lattuada's "Mafioso" is next up. The film will be one of the retrospective showings at the New York Film Festival this year.

...or maybe not. According to this week's Village Voice (in their Fall Movie Preview), Godard's "Two or Three Things I Know About Her" will finally open at the NY Film Forum on November 17th.

I don't know why they are sitting on Last Year At Marienbad. Time for more Resnais.

I've only seen this film on a really bad VHS tape with hard to read subtitles. I don't remember it being on par with Weekend or Pierrot or Contempt or even M-F, but I look forward to giving it another shot, especially now that I'll be expecting it to be a bit heavy handed with commercialism criticism.

Mafioso played at the NYFF with a sparkling new print (and a Rialto logo), so I imagine the Criterion can't be too far behind. The film itself starts slowly but picks up all kinds of momentum along the way.

FWIW, Fanfan La Tulipe, Classe Tous Risques, The Two Of Us and Army Of Shadows are all playing the Siskel Film Center in November.

Rialto's site is showing a theatrical run starting in January.

Am I right to assume that it takes about 6 months to a year from the time they are in the theaters to the time they are on Criterion DVD?

Thats correct. Army of Shadows came out in April, but we haven't see a DVD yet. Some come out sooner than others, but your timetable is a good estimate.

The last time I did an analysis of the Rialto theatrical-to-DVD window, it was 9 months. That was a couple of years ago, though.

Good point. Maybe they are waiting for more materials? Or is it like THE PRODUCERS where Criterion doesn't have the rights to release it?

I believe Criterion gained the rights for The Milky Way at the same time as The Phantom of Liberty (makes sense, no?) but have been sitting on it for some reason.

Perhaps they are prioritizing. Exterminating Angel, Simon of the Desert.

I hope those two are soon...
then I'm hoping for Los Olvidados

Wasn't Koch Lorber supposed to release this. Are they in some rights trouble with the film again?

They seem to have been having some trouble scraping together supplements for their Bunuel releases, and they've already tackled several of the later French films, so maybe they're saving
The Milky Way for a bare-bones Eclipse. Personally, just about anything Mexican is welcome to jump the queue!

Rialto has always been good about answering my emails. They may not know what the story is with Milky Way, but it might be worth my asking.
Though, how long did Fallen Idol take? It seemed like over a year, or maybe I was just being antzy.
