He did so many cookie-cutter rom-coms in his later era, that I forgot he had quite so many huge and memorable movies earlier in his career. Like I had no idea he directed Misery, and that was a huge deal when I was in Junior High. I revisited Princess Bride with my kids recently, and that is still lovely. He was always a welcome and instantly recognizable presence as an actor, I have many childhood memories of him from All In the Family re-runs. Sorry to see him go, especially like this.

From the Guardian:
Nick Reiner has been arrested following after the death of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, according to Los Angeles jail records.

Nick, 32, was taken into custody Sunday night, the records show. The records accuse him of felony “gang activity” but do not elaborate, and indicated that bail was set at $4m.

Nick was brought in for questioning shortly after the Los Angeles fire department responded to a call for medical aid to the couple’s house in Brentwood at 3.30pm local time. On arrival, they found a man, 78, and a woman, 68, dead, which were later confirmed to be Rob and Michele. It is understood their daughter, Romy, who lives opposite, discovered them.

Sorry about that. Thought he was referring to a fourth incident.

I assume by "felony gang activity," which is not a crime in NY, it means some form of felony gang assault, which suggests the involvement of others.

This is all insane

Edit: My mistake, I was looking at NY law. There does appear to be a penal statute related to gang activity in California

I’m not going to post it, but fucking Christ-Trump’s response has filled with me so much fucking disgust and rage-that I want to warn anyone to stay away from it. This loss hurts enough. RIP

He took on films like Alex & Emma and Rumor Has It.. at the 11th hour due to their original directors being fired

Incredibly, Melissa McCarthy and her untalented husband/writing partner fired him from this shit just before rolling

Agreed. Absolutely vile.

RIP Rob Reiner. An incredible talent, behind, and in front of, the camera.

The Hollywood Reporter's obituary was likely pre-written (no surprise given Reiner's age) as it was turned around really fast, extensive and incredibly detailed. It goes without saying Reiner packed in so much into his life, it could've been written about three or four different people who happened to be the same person: beloved character in one of the most popular sitcoms in history, massively successful film director who made a series of widely-beloved films, a massively successful producer who didn't just co-own Castle Rock but went to the mat for a television series that became perhaps the most successful and influential television show of the 1990s, and finally a lifelong activist who probably made a greater difference than anyone else in Hollywood in improving people's lives. It's mostly for that last part that makes this an immense tragedy - if anything, we needed him more now than anytime before. His parents lived to 98 and 94 so it's no stretch to think he had another productive decade ahead of him. Given everything they did for their son Nick, this is an absolute abomination.

I was watching a lot of chess tournaments online during the pandemics, and sometimes the commentators would talk about movies when nothing happened on the chessboard (particularly with Peter Svidler and Jan Gustafsson commentating). During one tournament, British GM Daniel King was commentating with German GM Jan Gustafsson, and Daniel King mentioned The Sure Thing as one of his favourite movies. I had never seen it but bought a cheap BD online (6€ or so) out of curiosity and enjoyed the film.

Terrible news re. Rob Reiner and the wife. RIP.

This really bummed me out and I’m not even one of those people who grew up loving his movies. I’m a bit too young for Princess Bride. Stand By Me was much bigger in my circles because it was on tv a lot more and River Phoenix was huge. Misery was a much bigger movie when it came out then it’s remembered today. The thing with Rob Reiner is he was always around, always affable and always came across as a decent human being. I could be wrong about this, but I always had the impression he played down his acting and I never got why. I think there’s a lot of people who completely forgot he even was an actor and, in my opinion, a very gifted one. What a terrible, terrible thing to happen and for that pig to then do what he did… motherfucker….

My wife knows him exclusively and lovingly from New Girl. I feel like that probably added a lot of new fans.

Same with The Bear, where he probably would've had an expanded role next season

I love The Sure Thing so much more than The Princess Bride. John Cusack pacing up and down a pool as he tries to woo Daphne Zuniga is hysterical

Of course, we don't want this thread to descend into Agent Orange territory, but I gotta say....

Everytime you think he has hit rock bottom, lower than low, he manages to surprise you yet again.

The fucking douchebag doubled down on a press conference today and the feckless press didn't pressure him about how those comments are divisive or how Reiner's wife, Michele, was the photographer for his cover of the Art of the Deal. The day that guy dies it will be a massive celebration and I just hope it comes soon and in the most painful way.

I particularly feel for their daughter Romy who found them. And that's before you consider that her own brother did it.

Well of course, you’re talking about someone who would never admit he was wrong or went too far and considers backtracking in any way a sign of weakness. And considering anyone who so much as slights him (until they work themselves back in good graces) no matter whatever their history, a bitter enemy, is also on brand. This is just a more extreme instance. Rob Reiner was such a lovable jolly guy, like Santa Claus, not to call to attention the awful month for this to happen. And sure he’s mentioned he did not like him or his policies, most of the country doesn’t. But because of just that, he feels the need to outspokenly say essentially that him and his wife deserved to be gruesomely murdered just because he didn’t like him when he didn’t have to say anything at all.. yeah it’s shocking, but predictable, considering his previous comments about dead soldiers, civil rights leaders and war heroes, and anyone else that wasn’t currently doing him any favors, which is his only moral compass.

The Vanilla Skynet channel, which compiles the extant Siskel & Ebert reviews for various filmmakers, has updated their Rob Reiner video. Has any career been derailed harder than with North, with its upsettingly callous (maybe more so now) approach to parent-child relationships?
