That's good to know, but I'll just say for the record or in case I was unclear that I wasn't criticizing MoC's track record. What I have in mind is what some of the major studios have done as well as Criterion's over-reliance on Bruce Eder and a few others in the LD era and people like Cowie in the DVD era. And, for me, the quality of the criticism contained in the essay or criticism (which I touched on) is probably more important than the overkill issue.

We're not using the new German score that was on the Spanish edition. The MoC edition will have two scores, the Timothy Brock orchestral score and a gorgeous new solo harp score by Stan Ambrose, recorded last week.
Nice. I smell release of the year.... oh, but then there's that Nibelungen set...

I got tired of waiting, and in the meantime decided to get out the existing Eureka disc on rental. Great film, but having seen several German classics from Eureka in the past few months I've had more than I can take of the mellifluous tones of Russell Cawthorne. How did his voice come to be used on so many German releases when his pronunciation is so bad? For God's sake, he can't even pronounce Murnau. (And on the Testament of Dr Mabuse disc, he keeps referring to 'Dr Mabooz').
Don't know if it's the same bloke, but according to IMDb, a Russell Cawthorne had bit-parts in a couple of Bruce Lee pics. From there, I suppose, it is but a short step to become the modern voice of German expressionism.
Anyway, roll on June.

So, what's the deal on the second disc?
Play.com has the release up for pre-order (release date is 6/19), and it lists a higher retail price than the usual MoC disc, but the specs are nearly the same.

Now that I've pinched myself, Id hazard a guess tha a number has been reserved for The Last Laugh re-release, and the other will be Phantom, as I understand a new restoration is imminent.

Hmm, good point. I suppose syncing Hans Erdmann's original score - if it is indeed the original, written in 1921 - may be tricky, with missing scenes and such, not to mention expensive. Maybe rescoring it or getting ANOTHER new one, a la Faust?
As long as that heavy metal abomination is nowhere to be found, I'm happy...

Imagewise, the Kino NOS is as good as it gets, though the cropping issue is mysterious.. the edition is the first to show monsieur Schreck popping out his coffin on the ship without braining him (his whole head is shown at last), and includes image border info not present in the Image/other discs.. yet in some areas there is cropping nonexistent in the other discs. But the image quality, detail, flawless tinting, full edition of the "Murnau-foundation authorized" edition will probably never be surpassed. The only improvement we can hope for is an equally skillful transfer, converted to NTSC correctly (the effect is virtually indetectable on this disc I must say), whereby the negative/aperture corners are visible-- and presented WITH THE BECCE score. I don't know why these fucking people do this, compose new scores, when they have the directors instructions on hand. Why no fucking industrial synth during METROPOLIS or NIBELUNGEN? Because it would be sacrilege to shit away the Hupperz score. No less so for Murnau than Lang.

I agree the Kino looks wonderful -- I find it hard to imagine anyone doing a significantly better job. The two scores, however, just don't cut it.

You said it-- the two scores are opposite ends of one horrible nightmare. Believe it or not that fucking industrial mess is the ZDF/Arte "officially sanctioned" version coming outa the FWMS!!! Kino commisioned that creeping sleep-gas from Sosin as an alternative.
Of course one other thing.. seeing the original era-intertitles would be groovy. MoC is usually very good about that so if they came out w their own edition matching the skill of Kino's image, with Becce's score, with translations up to par with Kino's (incidentally the Swede who did the translations for the new Stillers demands a standing ovation, they are sublime.. another reason why I must grab a copy of DER SPIELER when it comes out as I'm certain these will be the premeire translations into English of the film to date), then we are looking at a rather important release.

I'm gonna do my own score from this one day, using wacky sound effects and James Brown's "Sex Machine" for the coffin scene. ':lol:'
Hell, everybody else is doing a crap score, why can't I?
