Sanjuro, when you say the subs are "simple", you mean they leave out the local flavor/slang/culture of the spoken dialog. right?

Yeah, that's right. They're not confusing and there's a few good attempts at humour where appropriate. I'm sure if I weren't listening properly I'd have a good time with them.
