Have you actually SEEN the movie? How elitist are we getting here?

It is hardly "elitist" to contend that a bland movie directed by one of the blandest directors ever and featuring 2 horrifically overrated actors is not THE BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR. Yeah, I've seen it. It was OK. I have zero desire to ever see it again. That fact alone disqualifies it from my top 50, let alone my top 10.

You opinion is well taken. We must live in such a bland world that a string of bland movies made by one of the blandest directors can actually have sucked in strings of well respected, bland critics to heap on bland appraise.

I quit.

Rather than cluttering this thread with dozens of critic's top ten lists, allow me to direct your attention to this site, which compiles them meticulously and creates a concensus list. If you want to see the lists of the individual critics, go here.

The Village Voice has released its annual poll of alt-press film critics (Take 7):

http://www.villagevoice.com/take/seven/

Participants include the Village Voice staff (J Hoberman, Atkinson, Lim, etc.), Rosenbaum, Mike D'Angelo, David Ehrenstein, Chris Fujiwara, Slant Staffers Ed Gonzalez & Nick Shager, Film Comment's Kent Jones, Dave Kehr, Simpsons character Alice Lovejoy, Ray Pride (a name that amuses my juvenile half almost as much as Wolf Blitzer), James Quandt, Carrie Rickey, Jim Ridley (who always has interesting comments), Andrew Sarris, Laura Sinagra, Gavin Smith, Chuck Stephens, David Sterritt, Chuck Taylor, Ella Taylor, (Slant's?) Keith Uhlich, and Armond White. Their comments section is usually worth reading, but they won't be posted until the 27th.

This is the most comprehensive data base for the nationwide critics top 10 list I have seen so far (472 lists up to now):

http://www.criticstop10.net/

The interesting thing is that the 5 movies nominated by PGA (producers guide award) include the top 4 critically aclaimed movies along with "Crash" (#7).

Pretty boring for the most part. I saw far more new films this year than I've tried previous years, and God, basically nothing I would personally hail got any nominations, save for a solitary nom for "Match Point" as best original screenplay; at least what I feel may be Allen's greatest film didn't get entirely left out.

Where is 2046 for best cinematography?

And in a shocking turn of events, the tightest catagory is...

Animated Feature?!?

Interesting aside: For perhaps the first time in my life, I've seen one of the animated shorts BEFORE the ceremony. Go Badgered!

Sad aside: Jeff Daniels, I still love you.

When I was young, I would never have thought that I would share so many similar sentiments with a toilet cleaner, but here we are...

I was hoping for a little love for Laura Linney as well. These two really were the filet of performances this past year (despite what Armond White thinks).

Well, even if I haven't seen the movie yet, my irrational crush on Catherine Keener will make me cheer for her potential win.

I particularly love the fact the Animated Film category completely shuts out the hideous, soulless CGI animation in favor of the more traditional forms. It's funny; the same year Disney announces they're abandoning cel animation, the only film of theirs nominated for anything is the meticulously hand-drawn import from Miyazaki. The rest? Stop motion. And all three films are faaaaaar more adventurous than anything the House of Mouse has crapped out in a long, long time.

4 of my top 5 English language films for 2005 were nominated for BP. If "pride and prejudice" had gotten in instead of "crash", that would have made my life perfect.

Keener was great in "Capote" even if her role was minor. She has no chance though while Weisz has already had the gold man in her bag.

This will be one of those boring Oscars as mostly all the major categories are locked up already. The only races still open are best supporting actor and best foreign language film ("paradise now" is a favorite, but not a lock).

Linney's performance was my favorite of the year too. That said, I must admit that I'd be perfectly pleased to see Reese Witherspoon walk away with the Oscar.

Paradise Now is perfect foreign language Oscar material. It's basically a Hollywood movie made elsewhere. Anyway, I've never heard of any of the others. So much for 2046.

And, for that matter, Grizzly Man.

I will watch the Oscars as usual for what is life without disappointment? That and the gf insists upon it.
