Yeah, I noticed that and should probably change the name of this thread some day. However, the news of more Kazan on DVD is always great news.

This is strange. A cover has been added to Amazon but a release date is still missing. Guess this one was already in the works before the DVD Decision thing.

edit: ooh, my bad. It says January, 30 2007 just below. Hope this one confirms as true.

Recently got hold of Warner's DVD for Splendour in the Grass and I think it's pretty safe to assume that they will be revisiting this title in the future. Evidences: it comes in a "snapper"; the only extras are "scene selections", not even a trailer is included; the DVD is dual-sided, meaning you get the Full Screen version on one side and the Wide Screen on the other; the transfer could sure use an improvement as it's too grainy and dark.

Who knows but I'm willing to bet that when America America is finally released, we will get a Special Edition for Splendour in the Grass. It certainly is deserving of an audio-commentary (Warren Beatty, are you still there?) and a featurette on the work of William Inge wouldn't hurt either.

I'm sure a Natalie Wood Signature Collection is not out of the question for Warners.

A Summer Place is a possiblity next year as well as a Natalie Wood boxset.

Makes perfect sense to revamp the current barebones edition just in time for it to be included in the upcoming set. Fingers crossed.

America America is getting release this month in Spain. Hopefully a R1 release will follow.

This is more of a biographical question, but why did Kazan retire from making films in the 70's? Was he, in effect, blacklisted for putting others on the blacklist?

No, nothing like that. I read his autobiography some years ago and as best I recall, his final film, THE LAST TYCOON (1976) was not going well and he was getting older and had had enough of it all.

I DO NOT want to re-ignite the political argument (and I have ambivalent feelings myself), but I don't think Kazan actually "put others on the blacklist". He named names that HUAC already had and justified it (or not) by saying that he really did hate communism.

which served to legitimize the entire existence of HUAC. (I don't want to "re-ignite the political argument" either.)

Let's hope so. It's one of my most eagerly awaited DVDs since the birth of the format. And it's arguably amongst a handful of Kazan movies where everyone agrees about its importance and lasting quality.

With that and the upcoming SE of Splendor in the Grass (coming next year, I believe), all I ask is for Wild River to come out (Fox, what are you waiting for?!) and I'll have all the Kazan I need.

Lino, Wild River is out from Optimum in the UK, but I am sure you know that. It is - contrary to what the cover indicates - presented in correct aspect ration, and as I recall the film looks quite good.

Yeah, but it's barebones and although the french edition is even more tempting, I think I'd rather wait for a definitive R1 edition.

Anyone have the America, America disc that was released in Spain last year? Is it worth the price?

I don't trust the Spanish edition. I wait for the US release. The quality is poor. The A.R is 1:33 and there are TWO editions, one by Suevia films that in the 2nd link one user says it's basura = rubbish; and a second release by Vellavision, that seems OOP and I'd swear that it's the same VHS master that Suevia used.
