For KWAIDAN, we're aiming for May (with ABHIJAN)... but don't quote me on that.
Still trying to sort out the cover art... anybody got anything hi-res that's great? --- The artwork we've received from Toho is strangely not very cover-art friendly.

There're a few posters
here. Do a search for Kwaidan and there're 7 posters, but nothing too impressive. Perhaps, you can do a collage similar to
Naked Island

There are so many stunning images from this film that it might be a problem - as in "what to use?" It's also unfortunate that there wasn't much inspiration in the poster department for this one, but picking up where other's have slackened off seems to be a up and coming MoC tradition.

I think that a frame grab from just about any shot in the film should be the basis for the cover art. All of the posters and lobby cards are cheap shit, or just too 'busy'. I am so glad that MoC are releasing this masterpiece.

Glad to see that the Hearn short stories will be included, nice touch. Also good to see Linda Hoaglund on board. Is the interview printed or on film (I assume it's the former)?

Damn I can't wait to frisbee this muddy cc (especially in the great tracking crane shots coming in over the weeds of the creaky home in the BLACK HAIR).
This is going easily to be one of the greatest discs of the year.. decade.. by far. Image-quality'll be the kicker. Squirming w impatience for this & FAUST. And shoeshine. And Naruse. And NIbel, okay, better stop.

Actually, that's not entirely true: the french and spanish editions were the first ones to present the complete 183 minutes version in the West. The MoC edition will be the first one with english subs. Apart from that, great specs but I still do miss an introduction. Nick, why don't you do one yourself?

Australia is PAL right ? so it seems to be missing 8 minutes.... or is MoC NTSC ?

Nick re the duration - the Australian disc (also uncut) is listed as running 175 minutes, presumably a PAL master with 4% speedup. Do you have an actual running time yet? Are you using a digibeta perhpas?
I can confirm that the R4 is a progressive PAL transfer (speed-up) from the restored and uncut Toho film. The audio has also been pitch-corrected to exactly match the original film version.

Just to clarify, the "film" (and also NTSC) running time of the uncut Kwaidan is 183 mins. The R4 is a progressive transfer so therefore 183*0.96 = 175 mins. There's no missing time on the R4 version.

Kwaidan: MOC definitely kicked the shit out of CC on this one--they've been neck and neck on a few releases but this is extreme here. This is a whole new viewing experience. I thought the color manipulation was intentional on the director's part. This comparison would suggest otherwise. Nice to have the complete version as well. Glad I sold my CC years back. Definitely will have to revisit this one again.

Darker is NOT better it seems. A startling comparison. The MoC is luminous. A beautiful gift, greatly appreciated.
