Superb package; that 'not anamorphic' comment in the specs is a typo surely?

When they create a new entry in their database the field holding anamorphic/non-anamorphic defaults to the latter. So its not a typo, rather lazy data entry. It's happened several times in the past.

I just saw that this was up for a release...I have not been this excited for an upcoming release in a long time! As a fond rugby player myself when I was in high school I will be glad to see this film again...now if only Criterion would release Chariots of Fire....

Yeah, the two disc edition from Warner Bros is just not expensive enough.

I have the BFI Free Cinema set that has Wakefield Express. I think it's a great documentary. But then I found Thursday's Children to be one of the CC's most poignant extras. What a great release schedule!

I emailed them and true to their word, they've corrected it.

Wow.. now that's a beautiful looking transfer (or caps from one) from CC. It actually reminds me of some of MoC's best transfers in terms of contrast, b&w & grey color values, and (Naked Island comes to mind) a not too itchy trigger finger when it comes to boosting and enhancement. Between this and the Postwar Kurosawa it looks like some marvelous restraint is being excercised versus some of the excesses of the past three years. Very beautiful indeed.

Time for Real Annoying Terminology:

It's a top notch Very Filmic Transfer!

What a great film and great disc Criterion has put out. The transfer is so sharp it almost looks like a hidef transfer. Must have disc IMO!

I picked this up and watched it over the weekend - and wow, what a package. I too was disappointed with the lack of bonus features on the If... release, and couldn't be more thrilled with how this one turned out. The commentary is the perfect balance of information about the creation of the film from the perspective of the writer, and the creation and legacy of the film from the perspective of the director. Near perfect.

I guess I'll have to buy the CC in the next B&N sale. Great film, but Netflix instant viewing only has 118 minutes of the full 134, so it cut out right after Frank moved into the new boardinghouse. I had to go to my local library and rent the Image disc to watch the last 16 minutes.
