Son of Fury is in the recent Fox Tyrone Power collection, and had a decent enough transfer from what I can remember.

Anybody noticed the For Christmas 2008 link on Fox coming soon page... the big question is now if it's only Seventh Heaven or even more Borzage.

At the Scarlet Street forum associate editor Ken Hanke mentioned that he had participated in interviews (presumably on tape) for an upcoming DVD collection of Murnau/Borzage to be released later this year. He specifically mentioned: CITY GIRL, SUNRISE, FOUR DEVILS (Bergstrom doc.) SEVENTH HEAVEN, STREET ANGEL, LAZYBONES, THE RIVER (fragments), LUCKY STAR, THEY HAD TO SEE PARIS, SONG O' MY HEART and LILIOM. Unfortunately, the discussion sidetracked to more mundane titles and no further details emerged. Hanke is an administrator at the forum so should be easy to contact.

That's good to hear and, to my mind anyways, the Fox advert seems to confirm this. I don't know why they would go to all the trouble to stick in a teaser that's going to go over the heads of most readers just to advertise a single-disc release of Seventh Heaven.

Finally a confirmation from Dave Kehr's blog:

The rumors about the Murnau/Borzage set are definitely true: it will be Fox’s equivalent for this holiday shopping season of the great “Ford at Fox” set last year. I’m hearing that the set will consists of “Sunrise,” “City Girl” and the reconstruction of “Four Devils” that Janet Bergstrom put together; on the Borzage side, it looks like “Seventh Heaven,” “Street Angel,” “They Had to See Paris,” “Liliom” and “The River” — which of course I hope is just for starters.

Hmmm, I wonder if the restoration will be done in time to include the "125100 print" of Four Devils? Bwaaaaahahahahahaha....

Evidently Ken Hanke has just finished recording interviews for the set which in addition to those titles listed above will include: Lazybones, Lucky Star, and Song O' My Heart.

I'm so happy that Fox isn't afraid to work on these silents. One can only hope that Warner reciprocates soon with their Stroheim, etc.

Now here's a question, will this also be Blu Ray?

The rumor is that Fox is planning to release a Borzage box that will include all his films that he directed while working at Fox. Supposedly the set will resemble that of the John Ford collection. One can hope, however the cost may be greater than the Ford box.

Holy CRAPANATKA! How did this slip by??

Janet Bergstrom at UCLA told me something like this would be coming down the pike, but I didn't expect anything this expansive. Way to kick my brains in!

I can't beleive Rupert fucking Murdoch is busting this stuff out (starting with the absolutely superlative-- still a benchmark release in silents.. nay any kind of film-- Sunrise, albeit pain inna ass to get ones hands on at first release), over WB and Universal.. considering the, outside of Sunrise, lukewarm public knowledge of the Fox silents versus the grand spectacles, masterpieces, landmarks of the WB MGM's, and the (still unknown) trove of legendary Universal silents (granted much is lost due to rampant managerial idiocy and cinematic disrespect and love of silver, but much remains, and remains to be uncovered... gems like the material licensed to Kino ie the Paul Leni's, the Wylers, Mamoulians etc). Anycompany sitting on Love Me Tonight and Applause, and is so oblivious to their significance that they just casually fob them off in an industrial coma to a company like Kino (who did them justice and love, dont get me wrong) deserves to be bitchslapped. Why traffic in the movies if you don't know about the movies.

Answer: to focus on Lorne Michaels' cinematic endeavors.

How many Blu-Ray discs of such a set do you imagine Fox could sell? Unfortunately, classic films are a niche market; recent titles, no matter how bad, outsell classics by such a wide margin that some of the major retail chains are refusing to stock new classic releases, forcing the studios to change their marketing schedules and scale back on classics. Plus, these titles are not well known to the general public. The Blu-Ray market is still growing, so add that all up and these titles would be a niche within a niche within a niche.

I'm starting to wonder if the only way studios can get shelf space for classics in the crowded DVD marketplace is to constantly reissue titles as "new releases." They throw on a new interview, make a new cover, and voila, new release.

Oh yeah, I forgot about it, but Sarafian did tell me back in April that he'd just recorded a new interview for Fox for a Vanishing Point reissue.

They don't even have to put any new features anymore. Just new, usually atrocious cover, and a digital copy and you've got your valuable shelf space.

All right! Man Hunt is finally getting released as well as Kazan's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Also looking forward to French Connection II (since I'm somewhat of a Frankenheimer completist), I believe this is the first time it's being released on its own.

You don't like the original French Connection enough to buy them together (especially when you can get the set very cheap)? You could always do a mental reversal and pretend you're buying French Connection II at $12, with the original French Connection as a nice extra.

Both French Connection films are set to be released on blu ray in 2009. The first one is being released on January 13th and the second one on February 17th according to Blu-Ray.com .
