Ack! I cry libel!!! My repeated innocent joking from years past can hardly be blamed for this phenomenon, can it?

I feel silly now.

I think 400 should be 300.

Some statistics...

Spine #100 Beastie Boys Video Anthology
Spine #200 The Honeymoon Killers
Spine #300 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
And I posted this same exact information almost 2 months ago. Seriously folks, who cares what spine a film gets assigned? The only thing that matters is the film being released.

We should give out a "stupidist thread of the year award". I know...there are many.

On the bright side, at least none of us designed that Milky Way cover, so we're all still +1

Oh, I'm sure you won't have to wait 2 years for another "stupidest thread"

I know this is an incredibly inane thread, but I WOULD like to point out that spine 300 was given away long before the sequence naturally went there (some two or three months in advance, I believe) and that spine 300 was the first time a single spine number was released in two different editions in an effort to make it the single highest selling entry in the collection.

I really don't want to make this discussion last longer than necessary, but considering the grand ole' hoopla they had with Life Aquatic and the fact that spine 400 has been set aside, it is perfectly reasonable to think that some big deal will be made. A 3-disc Breathless isn't out of the question, nor is some kind of obscene uber-package of Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Until it is announced though, its all speculation and quite frankly not particularly interesting speculation at that. It was all fun and games a year ago, but now things are getting silly. Besides, this thread is distracting from what's REALLY important: whining about Bunuel covers.

I can't wait until all you jerks get the wind sucked out of your sails just like when Criterion announced The Honeymoon Killers as the hotly anticipated spine #200. I hope it ends up being a three-disc set of Cannonball Run with a worse cover than The Milky Way.

It better be some movie not available on DVD previously. Like, some rather popular film that has notoriously not been released. The "Duke Nukem Forever" of DVDs if you will. What films are notoriously unreleased?

P.S. It's totally Berlin Alexanderplatz.

You know what? We're all obsessive geeks here. It's no secret. "The man" says he doesn't like our inane chatter? "The man" says we can't VOICE our opinions on exceedingly trivial speculation? Well I say wear it proud, bruthas! Spine 400 is going to be King Kane. Citizen Kane and King Kong superimposed over one another thus circumventing all legal matters... Maybe Citizen Kong.

Speaking of "The man," imagine if Spine 400 was "The Man" starring Eugene Levy and Samuel L. Jackson. Yeah, neither can I.

I predict that Criterion, just to screw with all of us, will never release any disc with a spine number of 400.

Nah, but how about a Eugene Levy Eclipse set? A 4-discer, including American Pie: Band Camp, The Man, and two discs of Greg the Bunny.

As to spine #400, I think it would be hilarious if we've spent all this time speculating on it, only to find out that Criterion just accidentally skipped over #400. One of these days someone at criterion will read this thread, smack their forehead #-o and will retroactively assign #400 to Koko the Talking Gorilla II: The Revenge!

My joke about Cannonball Run was unfunny, but we've only been getting diminishing returns since. Is it about time to pull the plug on our little version of open-mike night?

I think the bigger question is what should spine number 420 be. My vote goes for the Big Lebowski.

I thought the point was to make this thread as absurd--not funny--as possible so that it would get closed sooner rather than later.
