Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova on NPR.
Yes, I saw them at the Gramercy Theater this summer, and The Frames the night of the Letterman appearance (this past Monday at Webster Hall), where Marketa made a surprise appearance and sang two songs from the film. I'm a fan, no doubt!Antoine Doinel wrote:The Swell Season (aka Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) are touring North America this fall playing the songs from the film.
Once wins at 2Morrow Festival in Moscow
31/10/2007
John Carney's film ONCE scooped another top award, this time at the 2Morrow Festival in Moscow. The award came with a $100,000 cash prize from the sponsor of the festival, the automobile maker Audi.
The four day festival which ended Monday was created as a means to promote originality in filmmaking, especially in the arthouse front and as an alternative to the longer-established Moscow International Film Festival.
ONCE also won the Story Award at the festival

Marketa and Glen are now an item. Hansard is a little coy about it: 'We are together and it's lovely. It's just really nice. We've been seeing a lot of each other.' Irglova is more savvy. Their friendship was always viewed as 'a bit disturbing', she admits, 'because of my age. People saw more in it than there was. I was just travelling and making music with someone I respected. I've always had feelings for Glen but it was never allowed... In the back of my head I always fantasised - I thought, maybe when I'm older. Then when I had almost given up on it, we were thrust together.'
They were ruled eligible because Hansard and Irglova composed them specifically for the film. The Swell Season album came out before the film because it took so long for it to get distributed. Fox only selected two songs to submit to avoid vote-splitting. They picked "Falling Slowly" and "If You Want Me." Here are the 59 songs eligible for the Academy Award this year.davebert wrote:The movie definitely succeeds because of its soundtrack, and I'd say it's heading for Best Song Oscar territory (but are these original compositions, as they appear on the new Frames CD and also Swell Season?)
Pitchfork: Speaking of changing the cover, am I imagining things, or did they change the Once poster when it got released on DVD? They changed what you're wearing.
GH: Oh, man. They fuckin' killed it. You're right. They have us holding hands, which we never do in the film! Those legs aren't mine. Those legs are like three times longer than my legs. It's a completely new body. They literally just used my face. I'm wearing a hat in the original picture, so they Photoshopped my head. If you look at my head, my head looks totally weird, because whoever did the Photoshop job was shit. My head looks really weird, they took my hat off, and they gave me an entirely new body. It's completely bizarre. And they made Mar much taller than she really is. You can look at the original cover and then what they did to it and spot all the crappy differences. It's awful. It's a real shame. But at a certain level you've got to let this shit go. I designed the original poster and the cover of the DVD myself. Myself and John like to do things ourselves, and I do a bit of design for the Frames. I designed all the Frames album covers. So I put together the DVD cover and the poster originally. And then they took it and fucking bastardized it. Instead of walking down a street, they stuck us walking down a big guitar.
Pitchfork: Again, it's a different world. The music industry is sketchy enough as it is, but the movie industry is 100 times that.
GH: Yeah, it's just blatant. They don't give a fuck. They want you to look at the DVD cover and get everything from that. It's the opposite of what someone like Criterion would do. They create wonderful art. With a Criterion DVD, you just want to buy it for the box. They do it right. With the bigger-time DVDs...they could have done such a nicer job. But I'm just complaining from a design point of view.
That's what they always say when there are statutory laws involved.Jeff wrote:In this interview in Westword, Hansard mentions that he has known Irglova since she was 13, but that their relationship didn't turn romantic until this year.
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Glen Hansard:
Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It's been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who've helped us, they know who they are, we don't need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks.
Marketa Irglova:
Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along way. Thank you.
SPECIAL ONLINE THANKS
Thank you John Carney!! And my dad who's whatching [sic] from a hospital bed in Dublin&
I thought both moments were very moving - am I the only one? Or is this forum specifically designed to shit on the small movies that some of us dearly love? And everything associated with them? What the fuck? Clearly fucking conjecture. And are you really saying she was brought out to thank the director and the sick father? I really hate this forum when shit like this gets written, along with the remarks that he got with her underage... Wtf? And no, apparently I don't have a sense of humor about this shit.ellipsis7 wrote:Different context here, Domino - casts light on the relationship between Hansard & Irglova (in the heat of the moment he forgot everything except himself, including the director & his professional and personal partner, and also his father who was sick in hospital), and suggests that she must have expressed her displeasure backstage to elicit that unprecedented and gallant gesture on Stewart's part...
Going for a song
Dublin-born Glen Hansard of the Frames won Best Original Song with his on- and off-screen romance Marketa Irglova. The pair wrote and performed 'Falling Slowly' in Once, which they also starred in. Trash spoke to Hansard as he waited in LAX airport to fly home. 'People kept saying to me 'You've got a good chance' but our little film was up against three songs from Disney,' he says. 'I heard John Travolta say 'And the Oscar goes to Gle...' From that point on it was like my brain switched off. I was so high and freaked out of my head.' As for Irglova, Hansard says she didn't even notice that her speech had been drowned out by music, until host Jon Stewart told her she needed to go on stage again: 'She was like, "What? I have to speak again? I don't want to speak!"' Hansard's mum was at the ceremony, but his dad was in hospital in Dublin with lung problems: 'He was devastated he couldn't be with us, but all his ward stayed up watching the show and he jumped out of his bed screaming when we won.' Hansard has been inundated with acting roles and film projects, but says he just wants to go home, see his Dad and play in his band: 'People kept saying to me "When are you moving out here?" But I'm in a band. I'm not trained as an actor, and I'm not about to take other people's jobs.'
I have no idea what this means, and my comment was in response to Antoine's posting of the Pitchfork article, which was already under discussion in the Worst Covers thread. But thanks for sharingbearcuborg wrote:I guess Dom can use the search function, just not the reply function.
