A bit late with this, I know, but apparently the always-reliable Finke was
wrong about this:
Nailed is not an adaptation of 'Sammy's Hill,' although both were penned by Kristen Gore. I think the confusion comes from the fact that in the original script Kristen uses the name 'Sammy Joyce' as the lead character, played by Jessica Biel (the character names have since been changed). As you mentioned in your article, she was also the main character in the book. But the stories are entirely different with the exception of the names of the respective heroines.

The film finally has
solid financial backing and will resume shooting (again) shortly.

shut down again due to financial trouble.

I am beginning to wonder if these shutdowns have less to do with Russell's perceived inability to make a marketable film, and more to do with Russell's proven inability to play nicely with others. Its weird that financing is repeatedly an issue, that payroll isn't being met, etc.

How hard is it to market a film that has Jessica Biel playing a woman with wild, sexual urges?

I would speculate that Russell would exert whatever control he has over the marketing -- and who knows what that ultimately may be -- to emphasize the political satire. If this gets finished and kept in Russell's hands, I doubt that it will be sold to the public as "Jessie Biel Gone Wild!"

Cast members gush about working with Russell.

Come on, you fucking producers -- just let Mr. Russell FINISH a film!!! Yes, he's temperamental, but you can't argue with the results.

We are living in a truly, truly golden age of Hollywood filmmaking when things like this can happen.

That's corporatization of the atmosphere: the boss wants fealty.
Ah the days of crazy Dreyer on Joan, and cranky Sternberg on Empress, and irascible Lang firing pistols on mindbendingly huge sets... all on endless reams of studio dollars...

Years later and yet another perverse and disheartening
update on the status of this film.
Now just to await similar news on Lonergan's
Margaret or Konchalovsky's ridiculously delayed
Nutcracker.

I think Ruffalo just recently said it's done or almost done, actually

Yes, "Margaret" has been
confirmed as done by Fox Searchlight. Comes out in 2011.

I hadn't heard of this project before, and am pretty high on sugar right now and am assuming I'm hallucinating it

I had heard of this before, I'm unfortunately not high on anything and I can't believe, after all this time, that I'm NOT hallucinating this.

How did a movie about Jessica Biel inadvertently becoming a sex addict receive a PG-13?

More concerned about the "why" than the "how" in that thought

It's strangely topical all over again with the rollout of Obamacare. Here's hoping the fact that they've bothered to get it officially rated means it will soon see some kind of release. I'd rather see a butchered version of this than none at all.

Has there been any mention from Russell on the apparent similarity if this to "The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai"? After all, how many "girl gets hole in forehead, turns sex crazed" movies can there be? Not saying he's ripping it off (I can hardly imagine), just wonder if any of it suggested Nailed to him, or the surface similarities are sheer coincidence.

Probably sheer coincidence since sex and head damage aren't completely unique subjects with, just off the top of my head, FLCL and A Dirty Shame feature variations.

But the idea that a severe head injury lowers one's inhibitions or kicks one's baser drives into, as it were, overdrive is way older than that. I"d argue it goes at least as far back as
Phineas Gage.
