Details of two separate editions on DVD Times, one with the KTL soundtrack and a two-disc edition featuring Bergman's The Image Makers. It seems a shame that it couldn't all be put in the one package, I think I might have a job choosing between them if the new soundtrack lives up to O'Malley's usual stuff.

Much as I would have liked to hear the alternative soundtrack, the package with Bergman's film makes me overjoyed. A brilliant idea, especially as this Bergman film is available nowhere else I think.

imagemakers is available on a Spanish dvd with only Spanish subtitles. and here is the cover for the doubledisc:

There was actually a nice sepia print of the whole film up on youtube for quite a time. Same w HE WHO GETS SLAPPED (for those who havent seen either).

I'll be interested to hear what other people make of the orchestral score. I gave up on it after 20 minutes as it was annoying me so much - it seemed far too full of its itself and its own importance and consequently started interfering with my appreciation of the film. In an early scene when Mrs Holm haltingly enters Sister Edit's bedroom they start to play some sort of tango-based tune, which I thought thoroughly inappropriate as it seemed to comment on Mrs Holm's movements in a way that was never intended. At first sight of the phantom carriage the score itself goes all rickety too in a theme more suited to comic effect, which I also didn't think right. I switched off and watched the KTL version instead, and say what you like about it being inappropriate, I found it a thrilling experience that was more sympathetic to my viewing of the film. It commences with what sounds like the ticking of the very clock of doom itself, and thereafter with its looming drone and tones that seem to incorporate the very wails of the dead, with its sonic flares and low oscillations, it effectively conjured a sense of dread and, crucially, allowed me to revel in the full haunting beauty of the images.

According to both amazon.co.uk and play.com, the release date for the KTL edition has been pushed back to February 25, 2008. The Image Makers version is still listed for November 12 at amazon, but I doubt that this will come in time (nothing on the Tartan site either). Arghh....

Tartan's website is, to quote E Blackadder, about as effective as a catflap in an elephant house.

My guess is the Image Makers one is now gone - nothing on play.com now - and the normal version will come out in Feb. This often happens with Tartan's old stuff...I'll believe it when I have the thing in my mits, not before.

Phantom Carriage is getting a Swedish release with Matti Byes score (both main feature and extras have English subs).

THAT would be a CRIME! Unless they relase the Bergman on its own, which would be fine, of course. Hell... we need someone to release Ingmar's late TV work on disc...

Unless this release is seriously flawed, Tartan's delay probably lost them a lot of customers. Bye's score is wonderful. Hopefully we'll have this by the end of November.

Perhaps xploitedcinema will carry it. I hope so anyway, as I'd rather not wait for the Tartan and also the Bye score seems to get high marks.

It's a co-operation between SF (Swedish Filmindustry*) and SFI (Swedish Film Institute)

- The only store that I know that deliver to USA is http://www.smultronstallet.com, but they have closed their webstore for the moment so I don't know where you could buy it.

Thanks for the tip - this sounds like the version to pick up.

On the same date there will also be a Swedish release of Herr Arnes pengar (Sir Arne's Treasure), subtitled in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. Presumably it will have Swedish intertitles. Unless they manage to mess something up this will be a nice replacement of the Kino disc.

Both releases appear to be part of a series called Svenska Stumfilmsklassiker - hopefully there will be lots more to look forward to.

An original, tinted print of TERJE VIGEN turned up a few years ago, and it's better than the prior available sources. I presume the DVD release will be taken from this print.

For those who don't read Swedish, one paragraph from the Filmdelta link is particularly worth translating:

Bonus materials include unique short films, production stills, interviews, and fragments of lost films. Accompanying each film is a booklet with complete production credits, texts about the films and directors, and information about the restorations of the films. All films are subtitled in English, several also in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

The information on the Fanatiskfilm blog seems to imply that the extras will be subtitled, too (at least in English).

It seems like dvd.se is shipping anywhere for 250 Swedish crowns (around 39 dollar). Very steep indeed. So the box-set and shipping will be 549+250=799 Swedish crowns (around 123 dollar).

This indeed seems to be a good site (and it's English friendly), but they don't allow you to search for director's names. In other words: you have to know the Swedish title of a film to find the dvd. Does anyone their shipping charges, btw? Wasn't able to find something myself.

Try under Customer Services then Terms of Delivery "The shipping cost is 10 euro for all destinations outside Sweden."
