An interesting news piece from New Zealand's top current affairs show Close Up which was to interview Gallo over his right to advertise beer in New Zealand despite being an unknown actor on those shores - the ridiculous argument being that the New Zealand actor's equity claim he is less famous than Harvey Keitel and Willem Dafoe [who marketed the beer before him] and in turn, a New Zealander had more rights to the job than a relatively unknown.

Gallo, keen to share his views, skips the arranged interview then runs like hell at the airport after filming is complete.

One remembers that Eddie Murphy film of several years back (I'm blanking on the title) that had Murphy's name plastered all over it & the derisive reviews it got.
Of course the first thing I think of when I see the director's name in so many places are the jokey opening credits of BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA.

I just had this pointed out to me and thought the people on the board would like this knowledge. During one of the driving sequences a song plays that originated from the Twilight Zone episode "Come Wander With Me". The story was about a folk singer who was searching for a genuine folk song. He stumbles upon a young woman singing one that he felt was perfect. In order to procure it, he cheerfully promised her he was in love with her and would take her with him when he left. Then he found out that the song was linked to the woman's life, and he had inadvertently made himself the love interest. And he done dead of tragic ending.

I finally got around to watching this film, and while I get why some great filmmakers have praised it for honestly showing the isolated western male, it didn’t leave a strong impression on me. Credit where credit is due: Gallo’s ability to capture the banalities of his self-destruction eliminate any romanticism, even secondary or subconscious self-pity. The emasculation and nostalgic fantasies are produced without any sympathy for audience holds and, sure, that’s real, but when disengagement is the name of the game, it’s hard to care. The contentious fellatio scene felt severely unnecessary in the moment, but in hindsight I can see how it functions as a sike-out; doubling down on self-flagellation through false recall, where cathartic release is impossible to sustain or latch onto outside of cold, stained memories. It’s hard to judge a film like this that is quite good at succeeding in its aims- but as someone who often loves films centered around the stripping down of self-destructive males in existential crises, this was a bit too much (or too little?) for me.

I can't imagine it would be all that different from the CD soundtrack sleeves (Japanese edition, especially), but I'd rather have three copies of that Lancelot Link soundtrack than find out. Also, it probably doesn't help that I keep finding mint condition copies of the Superbit DVD for $1, but I'd totally purchase a blu if it weren't surrounded by such a silly set of circumstances (alas, Vincent Gallo).

The Japanese DVD edition was a stunner, though.
