That makes sense. It looks like practically everyone in the crew this would have to be working on a pay cut, though.

If this is in the case, Malick is in the unique position of not needing major studio support.

Jim Jarmusch makes film with money outside the Hollywood studios, as does Woody Allen.

They're not exactly making films on the same scale as Malick though.

Nor are their films as unconventional and confounding as his work. No one voices as much disappointment as the crowds who wander into Thin Red Line expecting Saving Private Ryan, or into New World expecting Pocahantas.
