I've seen by sheer chance a few frames of the restoration. It looked beautiful.

Une femme rêvée (1931), by Jean Durand, starring Charles Vanel, has been restored. Announced for an October 2019 Bluray release from Gaumont, France:
http://www.dvdclassik.com/forum/viewtop ... start=5145
- scroll down to the July 10 message from "1kult" for an unsubtitled video with lots of cuts from the film
- the previous July 10 message from "1kult" announces an October 2019 Blu/DVD release from Gaumont of Epstein´s Finis Terrae (restored) and La femme du bout du monde,
on the same disc. The latter film has been restored by Epstein´s sister, who holds the rights, and now runs 65 mins. as opposed to 55 mins. earlier. The Blu & DVD extras are also detailed.
The extras are slightly abbreviated on the DVD for compression reasons.

The full list of restorations for the 2019 Venice Film Festival, including films by Buñuel, Cronenberg, Scorsese, Tourneur, Fellini, de Oliveira, and two by Bertolucci.

Happy to see The House Is Black in the Venice restos list. I was shocked to see how much better the DVD in the Cinema 07 journal was compared to the Facets dvd. Hope someone puts this out in an English-friendly Blu-ray quickly, either paired with some Golestan films like "A Fire" (or "The Hills of Marlik," also listed), or
"Moon Sun Flower Game" about the boy in the film she adopted, though The House Is Black certainly warrants a standalone release.

Excited for Fellini, but if I am not mistaken this is the 4th Buñuel film, third of his Mexican period, to be restored this year. I am very much hoping for an eventual release of these films in the North American market.

I should have made the joke earlier because it's actually true : Irreversible new cut is a chronologic one with a darker editing.

But why? What's next, Avatar without the VFX?

Dying to find out what exactly Noé is up to with this. Really can't imagine he'd be interested in making the film "easier," and the fact that a chronological edit would be a (small, considering the content) step in that direction makes me think he's got an even bigger troll up his sleeve. Unless
Climax's crossover success has inspired him to cultivate a warmer image and he's angling to direct a
Star War.

That would be "a darker
ending", right? Having trouble imagining a darker ending to the story. For me, the entire appeal of the film is that the material is presented in reverse chronology which, like
Memento (although not nearly as good), reveals more about the characters and motivations as it progresses. From the title on down, the reverse chronology is the main reason for the film's existence (yes, like
Avatar without the VFX). Another analogy: Kurosawa re-editing
Rashomon to remove the multiple viewpoints, settling on just one.

They're saying a darker editing, so it all seems to be pure editing playwork. I'd argue however it is already extremely heartbreaking as it is currently, seeing progressively all that has been destroyed earlier.
I'm also unsure if such a chronological cut doesnt already exists somewhere.

The original Japanese DVD had an option to watch the film in chronological sequence, but I don't know if it was an actual recut or if it just programmed the chapters to play in reverse.

What are other Criterion titles that could use new releases? Off the top my head: The Leopard, 8 1/2, The Last Temptation of Christ, Days of Heaven, Yi Yi, and The Late Antonionis.

It wouldn't shock me if whatever Fellini thing they are doing next year includes a new transfer of 8 1/2, but, for various reasons, I wouldn't expect any of those other titles you mentioned to get redone.

Lang’s M as well.
I hadn’t heard about a more recent restoration of Yi Yi, and Google is failing me. Any details?

Yeah, 8 1/2 seems to have the best chance out of all these. If Antonioni gets a box down the line, there might be hope for his films too. The Leopard could have a chance if Criterion gets over their delusions about the quality of their release. For the rest, we will have to look for saviors elsewhere.

The titles I mentioned are just the ones I fell need to redone, but not all of them have new restorations already. There seems to be an ongoing effort to restore Yang's work (as well as other Taiwanese directors) so maybe they will get to Yi Yi one day.
