Using shitty cover art is hardly something different. If anything, Criterion seems to be jumping on the bandwagon in that sense.

However, I a) also feel dirty about bitching about cover art; and b) don't believe that either of the dvdempire covers are the final product, so feel free to disregard my opinion.

I was hoping for something nice for Masculin Feminin. I really, really hope that's not the final cover. I usually don't get wrapped up with the artwork like some folks around here, but that thing is hideous.

What a bizarre thing for a grown man to say.

I really like the Masculin feminin artwork, and I hope it's not some dvdempire creation. It has this antique film magazine look to it, like you'd find in Godard's closet at the bottom of a stack. Reminds me of the Colonel Blimp cover a little. I was expecting them to use the funny/cute Rialto poster. Naked and Angel seem like self parody.

Masculin Feminin is my favourite cover of the year. If it is real, that is.

Ok--now that doesn't look so bad. I can live with it----actually quite nice.

I think the MF cover is quite witty. Looks like we've got ourselves another variant cover design in the DVDEmpire draft, for those who care about such things

It's not one of the best covers, but it's risky in a very basic way...somehow...I don't know. I like it.
But how about the Naked cover that DVD Empire has? Is that Official?

I would imagine all these covers are early versions [not final] that dvd empire gets access to, hence the slight changes in m/f, for example.

Also, they are probably scans or something which is why m/f looks kinds of blurry in the intial dvd empire cover.

I hardly think some bored dvd empire employee has nothing better to do that dream up fake covers for criterion to tantalize & annoy film geeks like us. That seems somewhat unlikely, wouldnt you say?

On first look, that M/F cover is Criterion's best ever. Of course, what really matters is how it looks when you're holding it.

I love the font. Not crazy about her big head shot. Perhaps another area, Criterion?

I'm not sure that Criterion will go for 'another area'.

Its not their style.

Look at how intense that cat's eyes are! She is that feline's bitch.

Must there be an animal in every picture that is taken of her?

I'm with you there bruthah, but the optimist in me says that one looks like a placeholder.
At least I hope so, as I liked the LD art quite a bit (pardon the lousy shot grabbed from eBay:

Even this would be better:

I love that quote, like something out of Mad Magazine: "It's... A... Movie...!"

For all of you who don't like the cover for this release, since it includes the book, like short cuts did, there is an alternate cover for the pull out case. some dvd site once posted this image...

and it was removed within 20 minutes.

Probably because it is fake. Neither the font nor color scheme match the outer case, and the spine is missing the pinstripe that runs underneath the Criterion logo on every case.

SncDthMnky wrote:that isn't entirely correct either, the older releases, such as Brazil, have no line at all.
Yes, but the older releases used the old Criterion logo. The line on the spine came in with the new logo -- I'm not aware of any releases with the new logo that lack the pinstripe on the spine. What site was that cover posted on, anyway? It seems to me a simple e-mail to the site owner could clear this up.

I was just wondering if any other releases besides Armageddon came in both single and double alpha cases? Life Aquatic is in a slipcase so nothing can be done about that but has anyone seen Down by Law or Tanner '88 in a double alpha?
Yes, I am very anal about my collection and hate two discs in a single alpha case.

I agree with Jeff. Totally fake. Why would Criterion use the "Low" album cover for an inside cover? Makes no sense.

Actually, "Down By Law" is in a double "Amaray"-type case, not a single "Alpha"-type.

I prefer the "double Amarays" to Criterion's usual "double Alphas" for 2-disc editions. The "Amaray" cases are easier to obtain in UK - if a case is damaged in transit - and they take up much less room on my shelves.

The image from the Low album has been used as a poster for TMWFTE. Look! I've got (possibly false) memories of seeing it flyposted when I was a nipper.
