If you mean the 1946 Robert Siodmak movie, Kino Lorber announced the new 4K restoration Blu-ray release already. The release date not confirmed yet. (But is it in the public domain?)

It got dropped from Kino's website just as quickly and inauspiciously as it was announced.

I thought I remember problems w/ DVD releases over its public domain status/rights issues.

Even so, they still seem to do it, according to the release schedule from Kino Lorber Insider of Blu-ray.com.

The Facebook image looks like it comes from the actual film footage (as opposed to being a production still). That said, the quality of the image's resolution and contrast would indicate it's from the shorter version recently restored by Mosfilm and not the initial long cut that Criterion released on DVD.

As for Wanda I only ever heard about it from Ray Carney people (Minions?) and thinking of his name makes me wants to be atomized as I type this.

Wanda would be a perfect addition to the collection, regardless of Ray Carney's opinion on the film. For the uninitiated, it's a great movie that's largely unknown in the mainstream, but adored by anyone I know who has seen it. Plus the Parlour Pictures DVD release is OOP and pricey. Assuming a new home video release is forthcoming, I wonder if Criterion might try to make it a complete package of films directed by Barbara Loden by including her two educational shorts, The Frontier Experience and The Boy Who Liked Deer.

I used to agree with you albucat, but there's enough precedent at this point that this stuff seems to happen relatively quickly. One would think you would have a two year notice, for example, that The Apu Trilogy is being restored, but it just didn't happen that way. Same with Chimes at Midnight, which seemed to be announced and be released very quickly. At the same time, we've seen tons of examples of a label saying they have "no intention" to release something, then it gets announced a few months later!

If they are promoting a Rublev restoration, I would guess restoration work is already underway, and the biggest hurdles regarding elements and their ability to be used is already taken care of. This post IS the big deal they are making about it.

The restoration of the 183 min. version was performed by Mosfilm two or three years ago. Last year, a deal was signed to have Criterion release all of Tarkovsky's Soviet/Russian films of which Stalker was the first. I'm thinking the Rublev DCP (and DVD) Janus Films has available for booking is simply the Mosfilm restored version. If Janus is offering the 205 min. Passion of Andrei Rublev version as well, it's probably just a digital transfer of that sole 35mm print that's been traveling around the U.S. for the past couple of decades. Possibly, some digital clean-up work could be done on that early version and the contrast could be improved slightly, but it wouldn't surprise me if no restorative work has been done (given that "Tarkovsky's preferred" version has been restored).

Janus Films has dropped a trailer for Wanda (1970), written and directed by Barbara Loden:

In grim, rust-belt Pennsylvania, Wanda is down and out. She works sporadically, has abandoned her husband and children, sleeps on her sister's couch, drinks and smokes too much, and goes home with men just to have a roof over her head. One night she walks into a bar after closing and finds a nervous Mr. Dennis pacing. She takes up with him, and he proves to be a criminal. They go on the road, visit his father, and he plans a robbery. He's rude and demanding; Wanda accepts his abuse docilely. What future does she have? Wanda is the first and only film directed by actress-model Barbara Loden, who was married to legendary producer/director Elia Kazan. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1970 and won the International Critics Prize, then went on to show at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 after opening in US theaters that year. Janus Films will re-release Loden's Wanda in cinemas starting July 20th this summer.
