the Les Carabiniers DVD is pretty good for Fox Lorber, the print is kinda intended to look lousy anyways and there's a good mini-commentary by Sterritt.

Lionsgate Box

The Amazon box set (for 9/18) is merely a repackaging of the 3 Fox Lorbers and Notre Music.

Edit: The Lionsgate was a false listing, like DVDEmpire's Eraserhead. I called Lionsgate and was told the announcement of the Godard box will be in August/September.

If you are desperate for TWO OR THREE THINGS and can't wait for a R1 release then get the R2 version. It is the only Nouveaux with removable subs. This disc is strictly bare-bones and there are many good extras that Criterion are bound to hunt down for their version in the future. Check DVD Times review for more detail on the transfer. I'm happy with it.

...or get the R4 2 or 3 Things. I hate to be a broken record advertising Madman's releases but the film gets another great commentary and a decent transfer.

I assumed all the Nouveaux discs had non-removable subtitles so I ordered the Madman Two or Three Things. Couldn't wait for Criterion and everyone seems to like the Madman disc.

Besides, the Madman has a commentary (doesn't it?) and having watched a few Godard movies now I feel the need to have someone hold my hand and explain what's going on for at least a couple of them (Yes I know it's fun to work out everything for yourself, but it's also nice to have second opinion).

all the Madman Godards have commentaries: La Chinoise has a skippable track by the head of the Australian Film something or other but the rest (2 or 3 Things, Masculin Feminin, and Vivre se vie) are given by Adrian Martin, the co-editor of Rouge, and are very well-considered and helpful for contextualizing the film at hand.

Le Petit Soldat, Made in U.S.A., Les Carabiniers and La Chinoise are apparently all Criterion properties. (YEP!) Does anyone else see an Eclipse box set as a possibility?

still, for people who don't already have the R2 releases, those are some good movies, finally available for the American "masses"!

and no, I don't see an Eclipse set for any narrative 60s Godard film, I see Criterion treatment

MUMBAI: After UTV, Shemaroo Entertainment will soon launch a world cinema label targeting hardcore world cinema lovers. The company has acquired close to 100 titles, including works of legendary directors such as Akira Kurosawa, Jean Luc Godard, Roman Polanski, and Claude Chabrol among a host of others.

A variety of French, Japanese, Spanish and Iranian films have been acquired for the label.

I'm very happy with that Lionsgate box. It's got two that I've seen and two that I haven't. It's about time that "Passion" finally came to DVD. When will this be available?

I've been waiting to see if Prenom: Carmen would get an R1 release, and with Lionsgate's pricing, this is excellent news!

I have several Shemaroo releases on DVD. My experience with them is limited to Hindi films. Releasing world cinema will be a major expansion of their scope. The quality of their releases is average. It is unfair to judge them before we see the first example of their world cinema DVD, but based on what I have seen of their Hindi films, I doubt if they will present a challenge to the better labels doing so in the West. I believe their entry is intended to make the world cinema more accessible to the Indian market.

Shemaroo? They've got to be kidding us. Still, when it comes to Hindi DVDs, a Shemaroo disc is usually better than, say, a VideoSound disc. The colors are more vibrant, and the pictures are sharper. The major problems are the compulsory commercials that precede the menu. Another thing is that Shemaroo has the habit of omitting subtitles for swear words.

Possibly as early as September. It wasn't clear whether the announcement would be in September, or the discs would street.

And yes, this is fantastic news. It's a shame that Nouvelle Vague wasn't a Studio Canal feature. That film is pretty terrific, and now that I've fallen in love with Lubchansky's photography, I really want to replace my old VHS bootleg.

if you're region free, I highly recommend the R2 French Cahiers double feature of Passion and Nouvelle Vague-- both with English subs. Of course, it cost me close to $60 after shipping but worth it if you're a big fan of the films.

Since when did that have subtitles? I missed it.

I can confirm that while the other Godard Cahiers set doesn't have subs, this one does! I don't even know if it's listed but both films are.

Godard fans might want to pick up one of these -- Histoire(s) de Musique, a new compilation of early film scores. Includes a few tracks from the previously released discs of JLG scores by Delerue, Solal and Duhamel -- but also includes new material from Vivre sa Vie, Une Femme est une Femme, Alphaville and others. Very nice digipak with French and English liner notes. Awesome!

The version of 'Nouvelle Vague' in this set, if I remember correctly, is cropped to 1.66:1. Correct AR is 1.33:1.

About the Lionsgate set, I wonder which films will be (misre)presented in 1.66 (all four features should be 1.33), and then whether or not 'Scénario du film Passion' will be omitted (hopefully not, but probably so).

Depends who owns that. I don't believe it was a Studio Canal property, so I assume it will not be in the set.

MADE IN USA comes as a single disc from Optimum R2 UK on 07 Jan 08....
