I saw a very nice print in Paris, with French subtitles.

"Disorienting" is the right word -- I think I mention this earlier in this thread, but at that same Paris screening the anamorphosis and mottled images left me feeling genuinely seasick, such that I had to leave the theater to get a few moments of fresh air before plunging in again.

While we're talking Sokurov, are those Ideale Audience DVDs of his various "elegies" and semi-documentaries going to come back in print? Most have quietly gone out of print. I own them all, save for Moscow Elegy, but it would be a shame for things like Oriental Elegy and Spiritual Voices (two of his best "films") to be unavailable.

Yes, I was very impressed with the speed of their processing / shipping and the sturdiness of their packaging. They'd even specified on the customs form "DVDs (non-pornographic)." Which has probably completely destroyed my reputation with the folks at the post office.

Ditto. Though my favourite customs note was from DVDDiabolik who wrote, "just a bunch of used DVDs for a friend". I doubt that statement would have survived close scrutiny.

European TV channel ARTE will broadcast a 45-min. documentary on Manoel de Oliveira, directed by Agnès Varda. The series of Varda docus has just started. It may be of interest as an extra should you choose to release another de Oliveira film. Two project overviews.

Oliveira is just finishing up his latest film, Gebo et l´Ombre (Gebo and the Shadow), a French-language film starring Michel Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale, Jeanne Moreau, Leonor Silveira and Ricardo Trepa. French distributor: Épicentre Films.

He is next slated to direct A Igreja do Diabo (The Devil´s Church), a Portuguese-Brazilian co-production starring Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station), based on three short stories by 19th century author Machado de Assis. One of these stories, A Missa do Galo, has been filmed as: a 24-min. short (1982) by internationally acclaimed director Nelson Pereira dos Santos, and in 1974 starring Fernanda Montenegro.

Oliveira´s French production company for these films: O Som e a Furia.

Update on Agnès Varda´s travel docus on the ARTE channel. Apparently there is no single episode devoted to Manoel de Oliveira. Each episode has multiple subjects.

de Oliveira appears in part 1. Click on "folge" in the upper grey bar to read German-language descriptions of each of the five episodes ("Folge 1" thru 5) including video clips.

This is a long shot, but is there any chance Cinema Guild will be picking up Sokurov's latest, Faust? I am amazed that it won the Golden Lion at Venice last year but still has not seen any significant distribution anywhere in the world. Did Cinema Guild turn Faust down, or is not even available for distribution yet? I figured that it would make sense for Cinema Guild to pick this one up, since they're working on other Sokurov releases at the moment.

The Italian distributor Cecchi Gori is putting out a Blu-ray edition in February, but it's not likely to be English-friendly.

Got my copy of Aurora a couple days ago. I'm not sure if it's too late to correct, but "violence" is spelled incorrectly in the critic's quote on the back of the case. Now I just have to wait a couple weeks for my girlfriend to get back from a trip so we can watch it together.

Yep, we proof and proof and then we proof some more, but inevitably, every so often, a typo goes unnoticed. This will be corrected on the second printing.

Any news about the Early Sokurov set?

after watching his latest (disapointing) movie yesterday, i would love to (re)watch these early masterpieces.

Apparently Cinema Guild has sent out screeners of The Turin Horse on blu- one of the reviewers on the AVClub mentioned watching one.

I'm not even sure I like Ceylan, and I'm tempted by this.

Anatolia is going to be another blind-buy for me - but it should be a safe bet. This never came to theatres where I live, but I highly enjoyed Ceylan's previous three features (Climates being my personal favourite), and I'm willing to bet that this new film is his best yet, if the Grand Prix at Cannes is any indication. Thank goodness Cinema Guild is blessing us with a bluray version - hopefully The Turin Horse will not be long to follow.

It's the same price as their Once Upon a Time in Anatolia disk it just hasn't been discounted to $25 or whatever yet.

Despite my irish heritage I have a huge aversion to potatoes bordering on the phobic, which brings incredulity from fellow diners and lips to lemon, eyes to heaven grimacing from waiters. Consequently Turin Horse had me cross legged and palpitating throughout. Sucking sheeps eyes or slurping tripe would have been far more acceptable.
Put it down as another of the psychic scars inflicted by the UK boarding school system.
