There's Naked Lunch and The Last Emperor, but I don't see Criterion reissuing those, even though they could both benefit from it (especially the latter). The Last Emperor has actually had a 4K restoration for awhile, so I don't know if the article is referring to that or if they're doing another one. Nil by Mouth is mentioned as a future restoration, which might explain why the BFI Blu announced a few years back has yet to surface. No idea what the Bad Timing speculation is based on though.

Gohatto was restored separately by Shochiku and is on the Criterion Channel with Janus and Criterion logos, so it's reasonable to assume it's in the pipeline.

Naked Lunch is still with Fox in the US. Arrow have it in the UK via Jeremy Thomas and are working on it (The Last Emperor too.)

Yes, but in theory Criterion could reissue it with the new master from HanWay, unless their licensing agreement with Fox somehow precludes it. Their Crash release was licensed from WB but uses the Turbine master that I assume was supplied by HanWay. But Criterion does few Blu-to-Blu upgrades and I don't see Naked Lunch being an exception.

It's also a really fun one, but I haven't seen it since high school Spanish class, which may have colored my enthusiasm for it as a surprise break from learning with entertainment. Ricardo Darín is great in everything though.

Was Nine Queens on the Criterion Channel? Very curious to hear the rationale behind this pick.

I don't think it's ever been on the Channel, which is a shame since the trailer and synopsis piqued my interest

If you're into con-artist thrillers with twists and turns embroidered in a narrative of relentless forward momentum, look no further

I should have labeled that one wishful thinking, too. The mention of Queen of Diamonds made me think of it. A quick check at Amazon shows Nine Queens is really expensive, so presumably neglected and in the wheelhouse of what Criterion does best. If someone at Criterion watches this thread to get opinions at all, I hope they spot it! Anyway, insofar as people seem to have forgotten what a great movie it was, I've done my bit.

I am somewhat surprised that they haven't released any Argentinian films with Darin yet, it's a country with a strong enough film culture and he's their biggest star. I've seen a bunch of his work but forget most of the titles aside from this and El secreto de sus ojos

How many big auteurist films has he worked on? Just Everybody Knows? I figure that Criterion’s limited scope hurts figures like him.

I loved Darin in The Secret in their Eyes. For what it's worth it's a Sony Picture Classic release, as is Nine Queens, which should only be a positive for ending up with a CC release

Close the Door and JSC have both guessed Mr. Klein for an announcement this month. Sadly... in a direct communication with Mulvaney, he indicated that Criterion has only leased temporary streaming rights from Rialto and are not pursuing a physical release of this title.

He did indicate that if a groundswell of support for a physical release were suddenly to occur (cough, cough) his team over there might reconsider. But that's probably just boilerplate talk.

TCM festival* ran Oliver Twist, Summertime and Great Expectations (and Hamlet) so I say fuck it, even though it'll probably take six years for all three to be upgraded, I'll guess them all now (and just count it in my head as one david lean guess, lol)

Great-Expectations-Oliver-Twist-Summertime
Early Summer

Equinox Flower
Atlantics
Two English Girls
Devi
Stage Door

*I clicked a twitter link to the HBOstreaming-TCM festival a few days ago and saw those titles, but it's possible it was some streaming advert for HBO-TCM and those are just normal HBO-TCM titles and aren't part of any virtual festival? I dunno.
