That image is sadly not from Cat People but from Dreams That Money Can Buy.

That's 1947.

The caption indicates the frame isn't from the film they're restoring, though - that it's somehow a single frame at the front of the reel.

I initially had a feeling it was Hans Richter (there are phantom pages for 8x8) too, but IMDb had nothing listed for 1942. My bet is on a Warner's title (they seem to be restoring a lot of those lately), either Magnificent Ambersons or Cat People.

Almost certainly
Cat People. They said that the "creepy and not-quite-human" image was "fitting, for the film" from 1942 that they were actually working on. Criterion released
Cat People on laserdisc with a Bruce Eder commentary. Probably on tap for October along with the new release of
Carnival of Souls.

There is a phantom page for Mark Robson, so I'm hoping that we might get the whole Val Lewton set.

A 9-film box set -- and 9 films licensed from Warner for one set -- seems unlikely. But maybe The Seventh Victim is in the pipeline too.

Isn't the Mark Robson phantom page for Valley of the Dolls? That was teased in the New Year's Day drawing.

Criterion just posted a shot from Last Year at Marienbad... I know that prospects aren't promising of getting StudioCanal titles back, but I'd love to see one of my favorite films come back into the fold (never got the chance to get it on Blu and I'm hesitant to spend $100+ for it). Are they in a habit of posting stuff from long-OOP films?

They made a Long Good Friday reference recently, but that might be coming back in print (I think? Did I see that here somewhere?).

Technicolor frames from Douglas Sirk's WRITTEN ON THE WIND, starring Robert Stack and Lauren Bacall.

I'm assuming it's for The In Laws, which Criterion confirmed a little while ago.

Yes, although what are the odds of them doing a Jules Feiffer set with Little Murders, Carnal Knowledge, and maybe Popeye?

Carnal Knowledge would be amazing. Though Mike Nichols has left us, many of the cast/crew are still around - including the wonderful cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno and of course Jules Feiffer -and could potentially contribute. Rotunno in particular might be willing to supervise a new transfer - it's perhaps his greatest and most groundbreaking work, which is no small compliment.

I'd kill to have it enter the collection. Isn't the current DVD truncated as well?

Most likely, but would love Glengarry Glen Ross as well.

I recall some online speculation that the original theatrical version of
Carnal Knowledge contained more nudity, but this has never been confirmed. Amazing that the only R1 DVD was released in 1999! Here's hoping it's rescued by one of the labels. Criterion really would be perfect, especially considering the potential involvement of Rotunno, who at 93 is still deeply involved in the preservation of films he shot (and even films his peers shot, such as
I Knew Her Well). I've met a great deal of fans of
The Graduate that haven't heard of
Carnal Knowledge, which is stylistically and in terms of direction Nichols' most similar film to
The Graduate (and equally as groundbreaking, if not moreso), so there's also a built-in audience. Not to mention fans of Jack Nicholson, Ann-Margret, Art Garfunkel, and Candice Bergen.

I was thinking about Catch-22, but I guess I am wrong.

Now that we know that Criterion is able to access MGM's Avco/Embassy/Nelson titles, I'd say that Carnal Knowledge (a former Criterion laserdisc) is an eventual certainty. It's a shame that Nichols and Soderbergh weren't able to record a commentary together.

There is, at least,
this 2011 conversation with Jason Reitman about the film that I thought was insightful.

Joachim Trier in the closet. So, they really seem to be pushing his new film,
Louder Than Bombs, though it's being distributed theatrically by a company called The Orchard, which seems to have specialized in documentaries until recently. The Orchard is also putting out Antonio Campos'
Christine.
