I really wish they would start releasing the Golden Harvest titles that they own, or at least license them to Criterion/Arrow. I just want to see new restorations of Big Bullet and The Blade.

Intruder In The Dust is the gem of this bunch. I'm really surprised Criterion didn't pick it up, particularly as it looks to be a 4k restoration. It would be nice to see A Midsummer Night's Dream (1938) and A Catered Affair make it to disc before I die. Both are also excellent Criterion candidates, but I doubt we'll ever see them on anything but an Archive disc at this point.

7 Women is an amazing announcement, I'm stunned that it took this long - WA never even released it on DVD. I'm somewhat surprised that a new 4K restoration of Ford's final film is just getting quietly put out on Blu-Ray and not being given the fanfare of a film fest premiere.

I wonder if the politically incorrect (that is, pretty racist) elements of 7 Women would prevent it from getting a Criterion release as opposed to a more low-profile WB Archive release. (I love the film, which among other things has one of the best endings ever, but it's hard to defend its portrayal of the Chinese and Mongols.)

Woody Strode as a Mongolian was as progressive as Ford got!

Swing Time has blackface and they included a piece about the history of same to balance it out.

Winchester 73 has a piece about the portrayal of Native Americans.

I’m sure they could have done similar treatment for this film. Certainly I don’t think it would keep them away. It might just be that either this wasn’t a priority to them or they just couldn’t get it for whatever reason.

Goerge Feltenstein on the latest The Extras podcast confirms that they are working on 6-7 Bette Davis films and multiple John Ford films. I really hope one of them is The Informer

I wonder if we'll ever see a complete Busby Berkeley Musicals Box (including Wonder Bar) and what they might do to be able to include it (ie. historical context disclaimer or accompanying documentary ob blackface).

Has WB been including disclaimers?

Judging by Warner Archive’s propensity of prioritizing b-tier films by great filmmakers, my instinct is that Cheyenne Autumn would be a priority. It has a massive cast of stars and large format films seem to be very hot at the moment.

I have vague memories of reading somewhere about a longer cut of Seven Women, released once on VHS. Can´t find any online info about this. Is this true?

Yes. It’s the only version that has been released on home video. It is, I think, a preview cut. Not necessarily exactly what Ford wanted, but closer to his intentions

Offhand, I can't think of another Warner Brother's title that does. The Busby Berkeley Collection (1&2) did not include Wonder Bar and they only made it available later as an MOD disc. When the 2 volumes were combined into one DVD box, they still left it out, but I believe eventually upgraded the disc to a manufactured one through Warner Archives. I haven't seen the manufactured disc so I don't know what's on it & it's been a decade since I watched the MOD (which is in storage) but I think I recall some kind of disclaimer befor the movie, but I could also be misremembering another title I might have with blackface in it but is just escaping me which title that is. It seems that if they were going to release it in a Busby Berkeley box they (or Criterion) would probably do something to address it.

If the only way Warner feel comfortable about releasing historically sensitive/culturally problematic films is by adding a disclaimer upfront like they did with Looney Tunes, even if you can't skip them, I'd take that trade off, as annoying as that hand holding is, over the films not being released at all (like Disney does with Songs of the South, not that I'm interested in seeing that film in the first place but it should be made available as a matter of principle).

So where are we all buying these discs from these days? Seems like only MovieZyng offers occasional sales on select titles. If I'm going to pay full price, I'd rather buy from an independent retailer like OrbitDVD, but they don't carry Warner Archive discs.

Amazon occasionally put select titles on sale. But there’s no telling when or which titles. The other forum has a thread tracking these deals.

I thought Orbit carries WAC titles? At $21.99 prices admittedly but I saw the Mann noir with Grainger up for preorder a few weeks ago. For sales, I use Amazon (most reluctantly admittedly) or if I have enough titles to hit the threshold, moviezyng.

Orbit has carried WA titles before, but I don’t think they’re consistent about it and don’t often restock
