I'd like to believe that, but this is Disney we're talking about, who tend to sweep flop movies under the rug and forget they even existed.

If we're wishing, though, I'd love to see the original cut of Watcher In The Woods as well.

Well, Disney is known for their extraordinarily meticulous archives. Whether or not it will be commercially released is another issue, but I don’t doubt that they’ve kept the material from it in good shape.

Ray Bradbury’s archives at the University of Indiana actually carries his personal VHS copies of work-in-progress cuts, too

If WALL-E isn’t a one-off Disney license, I could see Criterion releasing this.

Apparently it was, at the request of director Andrew Stanton.

True, but the way the announcement was worded makes it sound like there might be more coming in the future:
We’re proud to announce our first collaboration with Disney and Pixar: WALL•E (2008), directed by Andrew Stanton, enters the Criterion Collection on 4K UHD this November!

A much needed upgrade for The Color of Money is a good place to start. Fingers crossed Criterion picks it up.

Clips of this iteration also screened a number of years ago at a film music conference, but I strongly suspect they’re testing the waters and moving towards releasing this version.
This version presumably has the unused score by Georges Delerue:

Disney really does need to cash in on the Gen-X nostalgia market while they still can, getting out top-notch, complete editions of Something Wicked This Way Comes, the Witch Mountain films, The Watcher in the Woods, and The Black Cauldron. There’s money to be made there, which might help make up for all their current Marvel flops and money-pit Star Wars TV series.

Oh, absolutely. They spent a fortune a few years ago re-optioning the Chronicles of Prydain books, and the original, uncut 65mm negative of The Black Cauldron is just gathering cobwebs in their archives

Yep. Delerue was scoring a much more somber, character-driven film than James Horner (who straight-up steals from John Williams in the opening)

Not sure where exactly to put this but with Steamboat Willie getting out of copyright today does that mean we can expect bootlegs to start popping up everywhere in a incomplete state since those iconic opening notes appearing in the trademarked company logo? Just something interesting I’d thought I should ask.

Not to piggyback on a year old post with no response, but I have seen several scans of Steamboat Willie from 16mm and 35mm prints pop up online and nothing else. Would love to see HD scans of Gallopin' Gaucho is possible! Are any floating around?

I recall that Anchor Bay were licensed the rights to several of their live-action films between the end of the 1990s/start of the 2000s, including Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Watcher in the Woods (the latter containing the alternate ending from the film's initial cut that saw a limited release before being pulled for reshoots, its inclusion being a compromise after Disney vetoed Anchor Bay's attempt to restore the original cut). Ideally, Disney would license this stuff out to Arrow or Kino Lorber (I feel like there was opportunity missed to license those films to Kino as they did with several Hollywood/Touchstone titles).

Disney did reissue Watcher in the Woods on Blu-Ray themselves and included an alternate opening that Anchor Bay was denied access to. It had been unseen seen the film’s initial rollout in 1980

They’re sitting on so many Touchstone/Hollywood gems that no one can license now

cdnchris wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 6:46 pm My only concern with this is that Mill Creek will almost certainly be using crummy masters for most of the releases, packing them on single-layer discs. Still, at this point, I'm happy that Disney is very open to licensing now, with this and then Criterion getting Fox titles and Wall-E of all things. But if Mill Creek doesn't release Ruthless People so I can retire my non-anamorphic DVD, I will be super-pissed.
I recently picked up Mill Creek’s reissue of Dick Tracy on Blu and it appeared to be a direct port of the existing release, complete with coming attractions for films new when it was originally released, so I think they’re just putting their logo on new pressings of the same discs

It appears that way. I ended up picking up Enemy of the State, and it was clearly just the Disney disc, with packaging indicating Mill Creek. (I also picked up Dick Tracy, but I ended up getting the actual Disney disc, not the Mill Creek one).

For all the trouble that Warren Beatty goes through to keep the film/TV rights for the character, I still wonder why he's never worked with either Disney or Criterion to release a deluxe 4K/BD edition of the film including all the shorts he's done to preserve the rights. So many things already there that can be tagged to this movie like the Behind the Badge documentary, Madonna music video, TV toy commercials, McDonald's Happy Meal Commercials to start with, Dick Tracy should have had already a Buena Vista series release by now. Who's holding this back? Beatty?

He hasn't been helpful in getting Ishtar the reissue it deserves (a film where he's not only a star but the only credited producer), so I can't say I'm surprised.

He’s been adamant about the theatrical release constituting exactly what he wanted, so no long-rumored extended cut

Coincidentally, today is his character’s intended date of death in Heaven Can Wait

How many other actors have had a future date of death predicted for one of their characters? The only one that comes to mind at the moment is Phil Hartman in NewsRadio - pretty grim given what was soon to come.

Theatrical cut is fine by me, but clean and upgrade the print, and add some extras to the release. At least just put all the extras in the same place, including the Dick Tracy shorts by Beatty to extend his ownership. Feels like the film has been abandoned. Is not available for streaming anywhere.
