Re: Awards Season 2015
I will say right now that there is zero chance that Eddie Redmayne gets not just his second award but back-to-back Best Actor Oscars at the expense of DiCaprio's first. I haven't seen The Danish Girl either, but there appears to be little love for it outside the two leads (though Vikander was nominated in supporting) and certainly nowhere near enough support to derail DiCaprio's narrative.

When was the last time somebody won Best Actor after getting full-frontal naked in a movie? Nothing springs to mind.
That's not the only reason he won't win but it'd make an interesting historical curio if it happened.

Re: Awards Season 2015
Feels like The Revenant, DiCaprio, Inarritu and Lubezki have comfortable leads at this point.
Far From Heaven only got actress, screenplay, cinematography and score, Carol added supporting actress and costume so it seems the Academy has a template for honoring Haynes films.
Directors pulled their left field, way left field with Abrahamson.
Studio Ghibli's last release When Marnie Was There getting in was nice.
I would lock in Amy and Son of Saul.
For some reason I don't see the Academy giving Sly his "career" Oscar and instead maybe going with Hardy or Ruffalo.
I think Vikander may win Supporting, only because her role was closer to a lead.

How is Bridge of Spies's script an original work? It was adapted primarily from a nonfiction book.
Winslet for Steve Jobs is a joke.
Rampling for 45 Years is great, but how did Tom Courtenay not get a nom?

The biggest surprise for me was Bennett Miller somehow not accidentally getting nominated instead of George Miller.

Has there ever been a director that won an Oscar in back to back years?

Yeah, Rock can be unbearable. Even having him announce the Best Animated Feature a while back was excruciating.domino harvey wrote:Friendly mod note: Even in jest(?), do not call others here racists for not liking Chris Rock or not wanting to endure Internet think pieces

Adam McKay: Oscar-Nominated Director of Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers (give me the cyanide now please)
Seriously, fuck this nominees. Glad to see The Revenant get its dues, and Carol still receive a fair amount of mentions, but this is such a clusterfuck (in what I would consider to be a pretty mediocre year) that I barely care at this point.
Also strange to see only eight nominees for Best Picture (you can really tell that the Academy just gave up this year).

Not sure what Chris Rock hosting has to do with internet think pieces about racial makeup of nominees except that Rock is black, which seems like an odd nudge nudge connection to yuk it up about on here. Re: Awards Season 2015
I have seen it. (Brief thoughts: It's okay, but McKay's direction was one of my least favorite parts of the film. Didn't care for the Scorsese-like editing, fourth wall cutaways, etc. Think it had a lot of potential, but didn't quite do it for me.)mfunk9786 wrote:Did you see this film? That makes a lot more sense than trashing other films that aren't nominated/weren't nominated for anything.

Re: Awards Season 2015
Also his prior work is good showing him to be a great director of (comedic) action without necessarily getting into stylistic obviousness ala Wes Anderson (who I would say is a better director, but his films are his in big shiny neon). Also with his increased political focus (The Other Guys basically ends in a rant that perfectly precedes this film) it was just a matter of time for him to make something more dramatic. Or to say it another way; better McKay than Roach.mfunk9786 wrote:Did you see this film? You are the one who quoted both of those items together as evidence of the forum being "anti-black" (in a post I deleted for breaking basic rules of decorum). I know, it was a tongue-in-cheek joke that I probably shouldn't have made. (For the record: There are some funny moments in both Talladega Nights and Step Brothers.)mfunk9786 wrote:That makes a lot more sense than trashing other films that aren't nominated/weren't nominated for anything.
