There's a Instagram reel of a early release unboxing from Press Play Video. The cardboard sleeves have plastic linings. How will that effect the discs for this and for future boxsets?

Back when it was first announced, Sister Hyde said (in her Instagram comment), "The disc book features newly designed compartments that protect the discs and provide easier and safer access than previous sets." The linings probably have something to do with it.

On the one video I saw, the sleeves were quite tight though, and it seems to me it'll have a bigger impact over tight that how they're coated.
I'm also wary about coating with plastics, which are prone to generate volatile compounds (like in the plastic Amaray-like cases, that end up having some greasy coating over depositing over time inside the case and of course on the disc).

The term I believe he used was "a little bit snug," which can mean anything, especially from a set that was freshly machine-packed.

Also, I mean, discs themselves are coated with a plastic UV-activated polymer varnish, so I honestly doubt that coating the sleeves will make a bit of difference other than providing a subtle layer of protection from paper grain.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but have the dimensions of the box been revealed?

The designer, Drusilla Adeline, said this on Reddit:
Hi! Designer, here! The box, if stood vertically, is around the same height as the Bergman and CC40 boxes, about 12". However, the nature of the Archival design means that it can also be stored on your self flat, the same way Kubrick stored his archival boxes. And that is about half of a standard blu-ray height. There's many different ways to safely and stylistically display this one on your shelf, no matter the shelf size you're working with.

I have a lot of music box sets and most of them are rather unwieldy in these situations, so I’m used to having them more in closets and other spaces. It’s kind of all around the house at this point in rather unorganized fashion but I could see this purchase snapping me out of it.

Restoring the original mono mixes. This is the kind of detail that moves the box from the "maybe one day I'll replace my existing discs" into my wantlist.

While the video focuses almost exclusively on restoring the Full Metal Jacket mono mix, the real gem is going to be able to hear the original mono mix for The Shining; the music and sound effects tracks for that film were was such a complex stew of cross-fades and sound manipulation that the eventual 5.1 surround mix could only approximate what Kubrick intended.

I've posted this elsewhere, but seeing The Shining on 35mm the biggest difference from home video was definitely hearing the original mono mix. There's a haunting to the sound design, as if the Native American spirits are taking over at points. It meaningfully adds to the film.

This rules! Hopefully this means they'll restore the OG mono for the moon landing. ;)

For those that didn't make it to TIFF, here's a look at the packaging for this stunning set:

It's stunning indeed...

But IF the discs were there, don't they obscure some text?

(I must be looking at this wrong!? I need a damn vid WITH discs.)

I don't think so. Criterion has already shown us what it would look like with a disc inside:

A YouTuber received an advanced copy of the Kubrick box and records their first unboxing.

Gonna be away from the US from mid-October to early November. If anybody finds out about a retailer sending these out early, give me a shout. Would love to be able to check it out before release.

Looking into it further, the YouTuber is Kubrick's Tube (a channel dedicated to all things Kubrickian) so I suspect it was intentionally sent early.

For sure, but if they exist and Criterion is just trying to get these big boxes out the door to retailers, I'm guessing one of the indies will pull the trigger ahead of time.

The person that runs that channel was thanked in the special thanks section of the booklet, so that is their contributors copy.

Thanks for the clarification! The video didn't mention that explicitly, so I was wondering what the connection was (besides a love of Kubrick).

When they were flipping through the booklet, they pointed out their own name in that section and said they helped a little (did not mention what they did.)

Ah, so they do! I missed them saying "it's me" during my original watch. Thanks again!

‘The Complete Kubrick’: How Michael Chaiken & Criterion Created The First Full Collection Of Stanley Kubrick’s Filmworks
I hope people don’t see this set as the end of the process. I think it is the beginning of a longer trajectory in which Kubrick’s films return in new editions. I am now working with Criterion on standalone editions, which will begin appearing over the next year or so.
