Does anyone have any information on this restoration and the differences between it and the Criterion release? It is a full ten minutes longer....

Nope, but am I the only one who held off on this after Joan and this were supposedly on the way for Blu-ray? Oh the perils of waiting for Criterion to get around to doing stuff.

I assumed it was the same as the version announced here in 2010, but the names pinned to it are not the same...

Assuming this is a slower rate than the Criterion transfer, which doesn't mention frame rate in their notes, could this account for the longer running time?

Apparently the print that Criterion used was from a single German source. The new 143 minute restoration is a frame-by-frame restoration from multiple prints from around the world. It is getting it's 3rd showing (1st was a private party by Hugh Hefner, 2nd was a rare BFI screening) & tonight is apparently its 3rd (1st open to the public) screening @ The Castro in SF... See you there...& hope this print will be the one Criterion uses for the Blu Ray.

The title is now out-of-print. Is there a new pressing coming or a re-release?

Being that this is a Janus release, I assume a re-release or upgrade would have to be imminent, and they have not lost the rights.

It may have been mentioned, but I suddenly wanted to hear the OMD song with the "It's a long long way" chorus line. (First OMD song I'd ever heard.) I did see the video on MTV when I was a kid, but rewatching it now as a film buff, it's a different experience.

So I guess this music video was my first exposure to Louise Brooks subconsciously.

Just for the record, from what I can tell, the restoration being publicised by Janus is the 2009 one released in 2012 in San Fran. The same one used by Eureka. The blacks look deeper than the MoC going by that trailer but otherwise we are talking about the same 2K restoration.

I only state this here because all over the internet I’m seeing mention of Janus’ “new restoration” and Criterion releasing it. Very misleading! (Even I got it wrong stating it was a 2016 restoration in another thread).

If I’m wrong about all this I would be very happy though!

The page has been updated on the Criterion site, so we can expect an upgrade to be announced. Moreover, it looks like they removed the sepia tone found on the Eureka release.

I guess one of the big questions is whether this fixes the noted problems with the Eureka such as the disappearing coins (not) dropping from the meter man’s hands.

I'll keep the MOC for the in depth scholarly extras, but will pick this up too for the multiple scores, docs, and commentary. impressed it got a new cover and they still confirmed it'll be a digipack

I still remember the beautiful metallic packaging of Pandora on DVD (this was as beautiful as La Double Vie De Véronique); the packaging here looks nice too; but why no UHD ?
I remember how I was excited to see the restoration trailer; so it is not good enough to be released on UHD ?

It is based on the same 2k restoration like the MoC blu-ray (sans the digital magic, hopefully).

isn't here is an expensive release in France (I live there but...) ? probably based on the same 2k restoration then ?

News from Criterion about their Blu of Pandora´s Box:

"I can confirm that while otherwise our release of PANDORA'S BOX uses the same restoration you're referring to (from MOC/Eureka), the coins scene that has been discussed in some forums was reintroduced/corrected on our end and will be present.

Note that there's a time difference between our previous restoration and this one -- this has to do with this new restoration running 1fps slower than our previous DVD release. This is a more accurate frame rate for the film -- 19 fps vs the old 20 fps.

In addition to the frame rate, this restoration was made from different sources than the previous version (the details about the restoration are provided on the disc and in the included booklet) and the runtime also includes restoration cards and credits, which aren't typically included as the total time for a film in our listings, but is the case here."

Pandora's Beaver Coins are back, and it does run slower.

A third lower bitrate but much more grain perhaps due to the contrast adjustment so it looks better than the MoC (aside from a bit of black crushing in some shots). Marginally cropped at the top and bottom but not to the detriment of the framing. Looks like a definite double dip for me of this very strange little film.

This is overall excellent news, via DVDBeaver. Glory hallelujah.

I don't see any mention though of the moment where an important bit of information goes untranslated in the MOC version's English subtitles. The Marquis Casti-Piani recognizes Lulu on the train, and finds a newspaper photo of Lulu with the words REWARD in the headline above it. He writes something along the lines of "Received With Thanks, Casti-Piani" above the headline, and hands it to Alwa, who reacts, and so on.

The English subtitle for that shot of the handwritten words above the headline only translates the word REWARD, not the handwritten note above it. I had to check the Criterion DVD to make sure I was remembering it correctly.

I'll be camping out at the mailbox on Tuesday to check it out.
