to be fair, however, Project X has always stated their intentions to release both versions of Edvard Munch (starting with the theatrical release)... I doubt that this new version will include the theatrical edit.

needless to say, I'm going to have a Watkins Halloween.

anyone have any insight as to what's in that Watkins box and what it costs? I'm hoping my procrastination in picking up his stuff other than PUNISHMENT PARK is about to pay off in spades. (Particularly since my disc of that classic is scratched.)

is it not a boxed set of The Freethinker (which is over 4 hours long)?

The Watkins boxed set contains the SE of MUNCH, along with PUNISHMENT PARK, THE WAR GAME, CULLODEN and THE GLADIATORS. THE FREETHINKER is being released as a separate 2-disc set.

I literally turned off the last dvd 2 minutes into it. Wow. That's an amazing treatment.

both of these look great...
If the SE of Munch does not include the theatrical version, I just need to sell Punishment Park (as I've been trying to get the other titles but have been postponing them for no reason).
I have also been postponing buying I Am Cuba (as I love The Cranes Are Flying) but have never brought myself to buy it...
good thing I'm lazy!

Gladiators is the only Watkins I lack, so I'll pass on the box...and probably get the MoC of Munch.

Any idea what the MSRP for the Watkins box will be? Given how expensive New Yorker discs usually are, I would love to be able to purchase all of these at once with a reasonable discount.

Amazon pre-order for I am Cuba. My advice is to pre-order it right away.

Does anyone have any thoughts on THE TREATMENT? I'm kind of a big Chris Eigeman fan but I don't want to see it if he isn't on his game.

It's a strictly passable romantic comedy that makes me wonder what exactly the director saw in the source novel that he was so intent on adapting. I like Eigeman as well, and it was worth not turning off just to see him doing his Eigeman Thing, but I got the feeling halfway through that there were already a thousand movies like The Treatment and in a few years there would be a thousand more.

Thanks. I would really only see it for Eigeman anyway, so I'll hopefully enjoy it on that level.

The Amazon pre-order for The Cinema of Peter Watkins lists this as a 5 disc set. Is the SE of Munch 2 discs?

The Freethinker is also up for pre-order.

Are both versions like OUT 1 and OUT 1: SPECTRE, where one is not just a shorter version but ultimately a separate beast altogether? Or is this more like the relationship between DIVERTIMENTO and LA BELLE NOISEUSE?

Both sets of Rivette films you cite are actually similar -- the contrasting instances are the long and short versions of "Paris Belongs to Us", "Love on the Ground" and "Joan the Maid".

Has anyone seen The Freethinker?
Until I saw the cover, just a few posts back, I had no idea what it was even about (as most information out there just has run-time, no plot synopsis).

Strindberg was definitely an interesting guy... how is the film? I love Watkins' earlier works, but have onle seen (part of) The Commune of his later stuff... (I could never bring myself to watch all of The Commune, as I just couldn't get into it... it looks like it was shot on vhs)

Okay, maybe I'm just imagining this but NEW YORKER FILMS has been deleted from imdb's MY AMERICAN UNCLE Company Credits page.

Can this mean that New Yorker doesn't hold the rights anymore.... which means that Criterion could snatch it?
