Just a heads-up that BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING is now SOLD OUT - it is our 92nd blu-ray title to sell out and the 42nd from Columbia / Sony Pictures. Thanks you guys as always for the fantastic support.

Watched Picnic again. Your classic 1950s neurosis drama but despite those age marks at the same time there’s something remarkably fresh and modern in this film. Much of it is probably due to the cinematography, and of course the directing, that manages to create something almost tableau-like at times, slightly distancing, even if it’s not to the same degree as, say, Rebel without a Cause. That comes with some incredibly beautiful shots, much of it owing to shooting all those exterior scenes in a Kansas-setting, with lovely scope compositions. A great cast also, though William Holden’s acting is sometimes slightly over the top, and his 28 going on 40 deal is a bit much to swallow.

Twilight Time has indicated that they have three titles produced by Jerry Wald in the pipeline for the first half of 2018. Wald predominantly produced for Fox - a studio that has a deal with TT - in the latter part of his career, with a handful for Columbia, so speculate away!

Yamada's (The Happiness of) the Yellow Handkerchief is a melodrama, to be sure , but with an absolutely wonderful cast. Not quite as good, perhaps. as his The Call of Far Off Mountains (Haruka naru yama no yobigoe), but still very good.

Martin Ritt's suburban melodrama
No Down Payment would also be a pleasant surprise.

That Ritt film had a scheduled DVD release on Fox's MOD line—and it still has an Amazon entry—but doesn't appear to ever have been released.

Yentl is now Sold Out. It is our (drumroll) 100th Blu-ray to do so - and we think it's particularly appropriate that Yentl is the milestone, being of course that we are big fans of Miss S. and have championed 3 of her films on TT to date.
For those statistically minded, we have now released (including 8 reissues and our upcoming October slate) 294 films on the hi-def format since we began in 2011, which shows that our sold out to still-in-print ratio is approximately 1 in 3, clearly demonstrating that the 3 000 unit limited edition is not only a success, but quite accurate in its prediction that 3 000 copies is more than adequate for most deep catalogue titles.
While we wish it wasn't strictly the case (we'd love to sell more and have greater funds to spend on additional titles), the encouragement that we receive from the hardcore collectors who keep the candle still burning for physical media is all the motivation we need to keep bringing a mixture of classics, odd forgotten gems and downright rare esoterica to those hardy souls who believe in what we do and generously give of their hard-earned resources to keep this enterprise afloat.
To all of you - we say, thanks afor everything !
Awfully long sentences aside, i'm not sure how many points I can challenge in this : the "hardcore collectors" that probably are just stuck with TT or nothing (because that's how the video rights work), the 3 000 LE business being a success despite still having plenty of 5 years old LEs in their stock they have to heavily discount to get rid of, or the accuracy of a system that misses in 70% of the cases.
But yeah, I guess : whatever works.

I think what they are saying is that because 70% of their titles havent sold out, 3000 copies is a more than generous print run for their catalogue of titles. The accuracy of that statement is obviously up for debate but I dont think they are saying we are a success because 70% of our titles havent sold out.

For sure, 3000 copies is more than enough for plenty of cases and that these figures support this. But then, they could have done 5000 copies, still being in the current situation where many of these titles don't even sell 300 copies / year and have the same speech, which says a lot.
I agree it can be seen as more than adequate based on the same logic, since they now have to sell them with a discount to be able to get rid of most of their backlog. I believe that with a limited edition system, it's not supposed to take years and multiple discounts to sell out your products. It's supposed to take much less time and also to "force" people to buy these "full price". In France, I was told regular releases are projected to break even after 2 years, so if a LE is still in stock after 4 years, I tend to suppose it missed its goal.
So in practice, it looks to me that most of these are overproduced, while a handful of them had way too small print runs, and some of the remaining ones look properly adjusted.
But as I wrote : whatever works. I mean, this post is first a PR piece, so I understand how it has to put things in a positive perspective anyway.
