I don't have the book but on the evidence of the Universal-produced A Chapter in Her Life (1923), a static, indoor Pollyanna-type story with no dramatic flair, it appears Weber lost her way when she lost her independence. It's one of the most worthless films by a major director I've ever seen. I don't know if her later work managed to improve on it.

Maybe it's been discussed already, but could we also get Kinoshita's The Ballad of Narayama? Apparently the Cannes' screening was a brand new 4K restoration.

Best of all, they refund the VAT if the package isn't caught! This probably wasn't available when the earlier Treasures sets came out, but I used it for the last one, and did in fact receive all the VAT back from Amazon.
Meant to say - thanks for the tip. The last couple of times I've had to pay customs fees online, then they deliver the package, which at least saves me from leaving the house.

I am not sure what is the best place to post this, but given MoC's great work on other Mizoguchis I have placed it here. Why has no-one released "Life of Oharu"? It is part of the great triptich, and MoC have released the other two on Blu Ray. What is the obstacle?

Well we know Criterion has it, being on it's Hulu page.

Artificial Eye released it in 2004 but it's out of print, I'm not sure who owns the rights to it. I'd kill for an MoC Blu ray of it.

Old news, but Q4 announcements are coming at the end of June.

I very much appreciated Peerpee keeping us informed of MoC's plans and answering our questions. Is there a point person from MoC that would play a similar role now that Peerpee has moved on to other things?

Craig Keller keeps up the MoC Twitter page, and posts here as evillights (if not as frequently as Nick).

Are the Pialat's gonna be Blu'd?

I believe the Pialats were major sales disappointments (despite being among the greatest things MoC has released), so I wouldn't count on it.

Are the Pialats pitch shifted? The main reason I asked if they were being Blu'd is because I'm new to PAL, still getting used to the speedup, and am willing to wait for a BD to avoid it. Oh, and the superior image and sound blah blah blah. Looks like I have no choice. After reading that Une Femme Marriée was pitch shifted I was wondering if the other MoCs are. I don't own any!

If MoC did venture into Pialat blu territory it won't happen until Gaumont do their restorations (scheduled for 2013) and will not encompass all the titles so far released.

They are following the tradition and the announcents have been delayed until mid-July.

I've seen the Kino Blu-ray and I thought it didn't really warrant 1080p. It's historically accurate (for what was released in the early 1980s) and has been done well (it couldn't really have been done better), but ultimately it's an HD scan of a print of an old restoration and pales technically next to the 2010 full restoration of the original Fritz Lang version.
The only reason I can see to get a Blu-ray would be for the uncompressed audio of the terrible score (I'm not a fan of this version).

Nick-is it safe to assume that any blu rays of any FWMS material wouldn't be forthcoming in the near future? (Langs, Murnaus?) I'm about to buy Frau Im Mond as it is back in stock, so just curious (I also remember you mentioning Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler wasn't ready for an upgrade). Thanks!

I have no idea, I'm not involved with any of it anymore. I'm pretty certain FWMS will be doing more HD scans and more stuff will be coming down the turnpike though.

Will the other 2 surviving Sadao Yamanaka films ever get a UK release?

Lang's "Nibelungen" and "Die Spinnen", and if someone wants to be really kind to us: time to get out some more 30s Ophüls.

Hani's "A Full Life" and "He and She", Naruse's "Wife, Be Like a Rose!", Epstein's "Finis terrae", von Gerlach's "Vanina", Widerberg's "Adalen 31", anything from Tsai. Plenty of different titles but maybe at least some of them.

I didn't know Spiders was in the cards-anything you know beyond wishful thinking?

It's not, or at least it wasn't. They'd like to clean up the last few Langs and Murnaus but they weren't any planned (aside from the confirmed titles) for any point in the next two years after I contacted them on Twitter.
